Hey guys, new F2P player here. Was brought in by a friend, just barely starting out. Haven't played with him yet though.
I'm really digging this whole "no holy trinity" kind of thing. I definitely think GW2 has very interesting mechanics. I've only played until level 8 so far and I already think I might end up buying a full account eventually.
I really digged playing a Frost Mage in vanilla WoW/Burning Crusade. I went for a Mesmer as first pick because it seemed from what I read that they're a kind of control caster instead of pure damage dealer, and that's exactly what I liked about PvP as a Frost Mage - controlling your oponent and dictating the terms of the engagement. Elementalist seemed more along the lines of a Fire Mage as in "nuke everything as fast and efficiently as possible", and while that also sounded fun I think I enjoy controlling oponents a whole lot more
While I enjoy Mesmer based on those preferences?
Any things I should know before proceeding?
Also, I'm currently experimenting with these hotkeys:
1-5 weapon skills
Q Heal, E elite, ZXC utilities, Shift for Dodge, WASD with A and D being strafe.
How does that look? What setups do you guys use? Maybe I'll find something I like better
Also is the use of the Mesmer mask obligatory, or can I hide it/replace it? I just kind of want my character's face to be seen. And what's with not being able to see your own name?

Your keys seem fine. They're close to what I use. I put heal and dodge on the thumb buttons on my mouse.
Consider setting a keybind for "Action-cam." It is a vast improvement. I put it on E, and elite on Q.
The mask is just a skin. You can hide your headpiece, your shoulders, and your gloves in-game. You do not need to use the mask, and you will be replacing it very quickly in favor of better stats, but if you miss it you can always apply the skin back on.

As a mesmer main, prepare to have the most fun and most anger
For starters, mesmers in pvp are hilarious, with casting clones and invisibilty, or barraging conditions and cripple, to stunning and blinking.
Theyre the most useful of support classes, and if you get the expansion, the time magic they get makes it more so.
Now for the cons- leveling a mesmer is going to be a pain until you reach higher levels like 30-40+ as the classes potential isnt even tapped into until then.
Its a much more advanced class but i love it to bits.
Youre the only class that can portal entire groups of people, which alone is a gold star.
But you are very weak and rely alot on your clones, which mobs like to ignore.
But in return you get... Arguably the best support and "screwing with pvpers" skills in the game.
And yes, you cant hide mask, glivwes and shoulders in you equip/hero screen, juat uncheck the boxes

One of my guilds is a lot of normies that isn't able to clear Vale Guardian. We have a lot of alts and they're mostly geared, but they aren't able to beat the DPS check.
What are a few classes to consider to up our damage without much skill, simply by showing up with the right builds and buffs active?

How many Revs? I'm trying to sell them on a Reaper tank, two S/S+S Revenants and our Engineers fully focused on damage, with five ranged classes handling lightning pits and seeker herding. As many revs as you want, 2 or 3 would be best.
Guardian is probably the best tank by far for the fight. Can easily take the damage with Hammer and AH and all the protection makes it easy for everyone around him.
