Feel free to discuss city building games from series such as Cities: Skylines, SimCity, Cities XL, Banished, Anno, Tropico, Pharaoh or any others.
Limit discussions to the games themselves. Meta posts such as "Why don't we discuss X game instead of Y?" aren't relevant to anything and don't contribute to the thread.

How have you got your population so densely organized, how are you getting food? Gathering/hunting? The town itself, the layout is ridiculously well organized too. Whenever I build a town food insecurity is always a bitch and the towns grow haphazardly, even when they get huge, pushing into 800+

How pleb is infinite money for cities? All the people i see who build the massive cities use it. That and they unlock everything from the start so they can build the perfect layout which is kind of shitty desu.
no fucking way
>>122915725
It's kind of FUN.
>decide to try putting in some metro stations
>haphazardly plop down a couple of them and put in a single looping metro line
>few weeks pass
>subway getting more passengers than my entire bus network I painstakingly planned out with city-wide coverage
>train stations still basically unused
If I fucking knew this, I wouldn't have put in any rails or bus lines.
>>122915893
Oh hey, Tropico 2 is one of my favourite city builders (and the only Tropico I enjoy).
>>122858226
I find it frustrating that the requirement for workers to be very close to their workplace means that you cant build proper towns in Banished. I enjoy the game up to population size ~300, but after that you have to start sprawling your population out and it stops feeling like building a real settlement.
>>122913910
No anno game has ever been fun to play because the most expensive video game series in german history can't match the technological sophistication of a bulgarian console game.
>>122926109

>>122933559
I kind of have to agree. Anno can be damn comfy, but it really fails to match Tropico's charm. Tropico has this snarky, satirical humor as a foundation that just gives the game a lot of character - a quality that Anno lacks. Both recent, futuristic Annos felt ... sterile.
It took me YEARS but I finally discovered how to research stuff in Startopia.

>>122956567
I thought roundabouts made everything better?
>>122959728
It just delays the innevitable. It's definitely better than simple crossings, but it does not solve your problems.
Usually making a grid system with some hierarchy and some cul de sacs for the small roads is the best option

Layout is still everything in Skylines
But instead of production layout, you need to think in terms of what will channel traffic best, and use IRL examples

Obviously pic related is a bit extreme and not as much as I'd want to see (also way to complex to model well in a prop), but it does an OK job of showing the concept.
Also it's hard to find good pictures of this stuff, since it doesn't seem to be something photographers usually snap pics of, even though probably around half of Earth's cities is full of it. Can't imagine why. Pic related is more sensible.

The city is basically finished. I might develop the waterfront a little more, but I don't want to fill up the entire buildable area. Traffic is not so bad except for a few intersections in the old part of towneven after I demolished the entire city and planned everything out again.
Although I've had the game since release, I learned a lot more about the game from this city, especially traffic management. I also learned that passenger trains are useless, although I love seeing raised rails across the city. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I noticed as I added more cargo ports, my city really prospered (probably because of more goods flowing into the city).

It was a fun city.
Unfortunately, it was plagued by bugs.
Post Banished cities, please. I want some medieval city porn.
(And an unfortunate misalignment with the highway)
The primary killer was an odd bug where cars would randomly stop, holding up traffic for miles.
This crippled the city, as you may expect.
It was a sad day when I laid it down to rest.
But, I'll always remember it fondly.
I made a video series, if anyone wants to watch.
