- She was added a few years down CG's lifespan, so the Kanako faction was already well established.

There are literally over a hundred CGs. Competition for spotlight is tough. The selling point of CG is that it features characters with distinct quirks and personalities. Naturally, those with strong ones overpower the weaker ones. And for those with overlaps, the idol that does a particular quirk the best stands above the rest.
In some cases, some Idols may have dedicated fans. If they're persistent or vocal enough, some people may end up bandwagoning and their size and popularity snowballs. Some idols with weaker personalities have gotten popular thanks to dedicated fans.
And if all else fails, somebody who works at Scamco might like a particular idol and force them down the mouths of people until that Idol becomes popular.
If an idol fails these three checks, then she is doomed to literal who-hood.

Upon just finishing up my marathon rewatch of CG, I really can't help but appreciate the dynamic between Uzuki and TakeP.
The incident with Bedhair Dooky validated his ideals. This was only made clear in episode 24 when he and Uzuki had that talk in the Concert Back hall.
Back in episode 7, notice how when Uzuki was about to talk about her own disappointments with the NG live, TakeP actually flinched and prepared for the worst. But instead, he was treated to Uzuki talking about how she wants to continue smiling till the end.
When two of his Idols gave up on him, and the rest of the Idols were losing trust in him, the only idol still believed in him and this ideal of "egao" that he had was Uzuki. Because of her words, he realized that his ideals weren't a lie. And that gave him the strength to pull everything together again.
In a sense, Uzuki kind of spoiled TakeP with this as he ended up thinking too highly of her and his lack of a more hands-on watch over her contributed to her breakdown.
Come episode 24, when it was Uzuki who was in the pits of despair, TakeP reaffirmed his belief in Uzuki's smile by claiming that her smile was hers alone. And that if it weren't for this smile of hers, none of them wouldn't have made it this far. And as he said that, we are actually treated to flashbacks of the very scene in episode 7 I just discussed.
Their own character arcs complement each other and goes full circle because of it.
