i finally had the chance to sit down and play a lot of smash 4!
while it was fun, i still don't understand why a lot of people like the game competitively. movement is still vastly less precise than in melee due to the lack of tools like wavedashing/landing and the various lengths at which dashes can be interrupted. it felt like the tools for an extended punish game didn't exist (combo your opponent to ~30%, reset to neutral, repeat - combos end bc aggressor lacks tools to continue them, not bc opponent did something well like proper di) and the ability to actually finish your opponent didn't exist. crazy magnetic ledges and HUGELY limited off stage movement neutralize gimping, and a huge portion of edgeguarding options that existed in melee that added a lot of depth to the recovery game rather than making it simply "get within 10 feet of the ledge and you'll grab it," which leads to survival to like 150% like every stock

how? you can stay offstage forever to try to get an edgeguard, edgeguarding works differently, you really have to chase your opponent, and even if they make it to the ledge, you are in control if you react to their limited ledge options since the ledge isn't as good anymore.
the game is different, comparing it to melee for competitive value is silly. try watching some high level matches to see how the meta in general is played.

the problem is the idea of an overcompassing smash general and smash community. each game is so radically different from the previous that the only overbearing theme tying them to the same series is the characters. from sheer gameplay, NONE of the games show any resemblance to each other except for their basic commands. "call of duty general" makes sense because all of the games are fairly similar in how they play. "smash general" doesn't, because there's no umbrella to cover passing similarities from one game to the next because they don't exist.

Theres always room to grow for pretty much everyone, I know I make loads of really stupid mistakes on a regular basis, but Im getting better at it at my own sluggish pace. Once I find that breakthrough that will help me put an end to the 5 or 6 characters that give me tons of trouble then Ill be happy, but after all these months of searching I may have found the missing link in Ness. Well see how far he takes me.
Forcing yourself to be conscious is how you get in the habit of things, in my opinion. Its like the fundamental rule that guides my life. If theres anything you want to be better at, even if its against your own nature, just keep forcing yourself to do it until it becomes second nature, and at that point itll just come naturally for you, and that applies to smash as well. Things like how to properly recover from the ledge, things like how to avoid projectiles, and more importantly how to be patient and wait for your chance to strike. Though with Sheik you have a lot more leeway in that since she can just challenge most things with hitboxes of her own.
Still, especially when youre fighting unorthodox characters that play by their own rules like DDD and Sonic, you really cant afford to fight them like you would more straightforward characters like mario or marth or else youll keep falling for their shenanigans over and over.
Anyways, I know you can do it, just keep on playing, it all comes from raw experience. Ive got a long way to go myself

To be honest, I think cloud was the wrong final fantasy addition, Sure the main character in Pokemon is Ash, but you don't put ash in the game if you have one slot, you put Pikachu because of how recognizable and iconic he is.
Cloud represents final fantasy 7 well, but an inclusion like black mage or moogle would have been way more iconic for final fantasy as whole, not just 7.
The moveset doesn't particularly do him justice as a reason to put him in even if his specials look okay.

I know the feeling. I picked Dedede as my main on day 1 of Brawl, and he's still the most satisfying character for me in Sm4sh. But fighting anyone with a spammable projectile is hell.
Gordos need to go through other projectiles. Dedede ain't gonna out-fight someone like Sheik in close range, but you'd at least be able to bait them into committing to a bad approach if your gordos were actually a threat.
