No citation, my own thoughts. What MOBAs are successful? The ones that make players complain JUST enough, even though a lot of it is simple fixes.
Do you know how many completely plausible and simple to implement solutions people have made to handle common problems in smite like poor matchmaking, inflated ELO, and improper qualifier placement?
Is it coincidence at all that Bellona, one of the most powerful gods upon release in recent memory also got a skin the very next patch or two? One that, from my perspective, sold quite well despite obviously looking rushed.
Was there a need to nerf HoG and change up the meta so much? No. HiRez shifted it up to keep the meta interesting and from stagnating, said so themselves.
Balance is hard and delicate; however some is more obvious than others. If people get just frustrated/upset enough to get involved with the community by posting on reddit/smgen/whatever else, that's increasing viewer engagement. Stuff that makes the player care WITHOUT driving them away creates a loyalty to the game.
You've got to remember, the people working on this game typically have a college level education. They know how marketing works and how to influence consumers. Nobody would play the optimally balanced MOBA because it would get boring fast, new characters every month or not.
Once again, these are just my thoughts for discussion. I am no marketer, I do not work at HiRez nor at any other MOBA; I can be blatantly wrong about all this.

Bartle's taxonomy divides players into certain groups. "Killers" enjoy the broken aspects of the game, and thrive on using them to enjoy more. Weak3n's a prime example, as he constantly BMs other players and has stated before that what he finds funnest about SMITE is abusing the stuff he can until it's nerfed.
The multiplayer solution that you mentioned applies to "Social" players, and this is what lets them thrive. A MOBA's inherent brokenness accommodates to all these kinds of players in different ways:

I always play Orc/Nordic/Celtic Barbarian type characters, and have been looking for a new Trynd to play. Tyr is the closest I've found. He even has almost identical idle animation to Tryndamere. If Tyr had Kali's ult he would be pretty much perfect to me.

If the ability is on cooldown, you'll auto-attack instead of casting the ability. The terribly designed UI gives one no indication that an ability is on cooldown if you try to cast it while it is so.
Casting abilities with the same button as the ability removes the chance of this happening. It's a useful thing, since (again) the UI is so awful it doesn't give an indicator if you try to cast an ability that's on CD.

Also you can just look with your special eyes and see that the ability has the grey clock swipe over it and also has big fucking numbers counting down to show you when it will be up. If that's not enough for you then its not the UI, you're just a potato and you should stop playing this game so I don't get matched with you.

You'd think that'd be especially easy since you just play Tyr.inb4 muh bad game design. I can't get over this, I read your other complaints and they're all valid criticism, but this one here is going way above me. It's as if you're asking for big bold text with an announcers voice screaming at you, counting down the cooldown of your next ability use. When it's all already right there and clearly visible, without having to look down.
Is having to take your eyes off the road for a millisecond to check your speed also unnatural? Would you want it plastered in the middle of your front windshield instead, obscuring your vision of the road and distracting you from the importance of actually seeing where you're going?
I also don't think it's entirely objective to begin with. When you go to press your numbered ability, most people use their middle finger, going from W/S to 1-4, then quickly returning to those keys so they can continue to maneuver around. Having to return to them again to cast your ability, or having to keep your middle finger there until you're ready to confirm the cast would mean you'd be unable to use the W/S keys for that time being, or you'd have to finangle a way with your hand to cover those four keys with two fingers, unless you're some kind of dexterous god who uses their pinky and thumb to get crazy shit down.
More people would bitch about this if it were the default setup, as it'd be awkward as fuck for the majority of people. Having to left click to use your ability is streamlined and makes more sense. You are literally the one and only special snowflake I've ever seen with this outlandish preference.
