For the past 4 weeks I've played dota 2 between 8 and 14 hours a day. While not playing I've spent most of my time watching player streams, tournaments and guides. In this time I haven't improved at the game at all.
I started as a 4.5k player, and ended as a 4.5k player, and I just don't know why. I've always been a fast learner, no matter what it is I do. In other games that I've played I've gained considerable amounts of skill just by playing, without putting in any extra effort.
Most notable example of this is starcraft 2, where I could tell each day how much I improved. I got faster, I learned new strategies, multitasking and microing all got easier every game. In dota 2 I've seen nothing like this.

You might be on to something. I used to play much more aggressive style early game, but all the guides and what not told me to consistently babysit safe lane, stack, pull and ward over anything. I became a much more passive support than I was.

Just doesn't work.
Creating space for your carry doesn't automatically make them good at CSing, decision making and farm rate.
I've won a lot more games from having good carries and shit supports than vice versa.

Exactly, something like sc2 can benefit from playtime because its so much harder mechanically, dota is veryyy simple to play. To give you reference I'm just above your mmr (4.9k) and I barely play, I watch more dota than I play.
