Imagine a boat, most spaceships are designed just like boats with the engine at the rear and cockpit on the front. This layout requires tech that negates the force of acceleration (Or lots and lots of straps.) While what I'm proposing is a spaceship that has its engine at the bottom, the pilot is facing upwards (Probably in a tilting chair so he can pilot in atmosphere.) To the crew it's like they're going up, they can look up and see the planet the ship is approaching, the pilot is laying down and looking up through his canopy. Underneath the floor the engine is working. And no fancy inertial dampeners needed, if the tech isn't availible you just keep your acceleration at 1G, if it is you can rest easy knowing that if the field goes out you'll just fall to the floor heavier than usual, instead of being smushed by the far wall of the compartment.

The problem is that humans are much more tolerant of lateral g-force, not longitudinal. Astronauts are always seated upwards in capsules or the Space Shuttle so they get lateral g-forces during ascent, otherwise they'd blackout. And orbital mechanics won't let you accelerate willy-nilly.
Of course, if there's sci-fi space magic, it doesn't matter. But the spaceships of the future in real life would be in this vein

The gameplay in ME1 is not as good, but the story is tighter than ME2. And since this is a heavily story-driven series, it would probably be a good idea to play all the games in order for the best experience.
As for how you should build your character, femshep + either infiltrator or vanguard, depending on whether you prefer sniper rifles or shotguns.

Right now we can observe quantum entanglement, where two separate locations see the exact same thing simultaneously. Where Mass Effect and other sci-fi takes liberties is in postulating that one side could control the effect and allow information to be passed along, which I believe is well beyond what the current theory suggests is even plausible.
