well not to brag but i was mid 4k for several months after MMR was first introduced, then I dropped from 4.4k to literally 3.3k in like 2 weeks. got up to 3.6k when i stopped playing dota 2 for a long time, played a lot of smite, and then came back to dota at the start of this school year and guess i just got lucky with the teammates who aren't literally godawful (i was incredibly unlucky with teammates when i had my huge drop)
i played mostly carry from 3.6k up to mid 4ks, and then i usually would just wait and see what my team picks and pick whatever is needed to get me up to 5k.
i had a lot of success with luna, legion commander, spectre, and ember spirit as carry.
it kinda sucks but there are more games than one would like where people freak out after one kill and basically rage the game away, shit the bed completely and go like 0-8 in the first several minutes, ragequit outright, have lag problems, are south american and are impossible to communicate with, etc. im not saying forced 50 is real because you can definitely have it favor you or go against you as a whole, but your team just playing their best and not freaking out is really the most important thing to win and gain mmr. a shame it is a factor that is out of your control though.

It starts you at your unranked mmr, so for example I started at I think 4300 avg mmr then I stomped that game and a couple more ending up as high as 4600+. The higher you go up in mmr relates to a couple of factors, KDA/GPM/XPM/APM etc. Basically you have to play strong cores to get high ranked smurfs
