It's already obvious that it was downed by something other than a mechanical failure, because if you look at the flightradar24 graph, it lost all of it's speed in a matter of a single minute, while the altitude was dropping rather slowly. If the engines failed, the pilots would still be able to glide some of the way or try an emergency landing.

Nope. The F-2 has better acceleration (until near red-line speeds), climb rate and maneuverability. The Hunter also has significantly worse energy retention. It will dump too much speed attempting to follow through a Sabre, or evade a attack, making it a brick. Having done some quick tests, the Meteor F8 accelerates faster than the Hunter.
