The best way I can describe playing Symmetra is to play her like a spider. Set up your turrets like a web.
For instance, rather than making a "kill room" and putting all of your turrets in one place (which means that one good enemy push will destroy all of your turrets) make a "kill zone", meaning anyone who tries to take a certain route to the zone, is going to die unless they are very, very careful. Hide your turrets every few feet, hide them low, hide them high, hide them in boxes/bushes etc... basically make it a pain in the ass to rush through an area.
Furthermore, make sure you are spamming your orbs, that way if an enemy does try to rush your route, they will start off taking some good orb damage, along with whatever turrets they run through. When you get close to the enemy try to be a pest. Your laser beam locks on to enemies, so make sure you are jumping around and running in circles to confuse the enemy.
Don't be afraid to jump into teamfights either, your laser beam does insane damage when charged all the way. Obviously don't be the first one to jump into a big mess, but try and jump behind and get that thing charging (you can also charge it on Winston shields/ Mei ice walls btw). Once youre fully charged you can basically nuke squishy characters and can 1v1 most tanks. Also, try and drop a turret or two during teamfights while you are jumping around to add additional confusion/dps
Finally, know when to switch from symmetra/fall back. Symmetra requires a decent amount of time to set up (I usually can only get 5 turrets set up in places i like by the time the enemy is out of the gates). If the enemy is steamrolling, you either need to switch characters or start setting up at the next chokepoint/capture point. She's a defensive character, she's not going to be the one to push the enemy team back, but rather keep them from pushing forwards, There's a difference and you need to make sure you know your team's situation.

Blizzard was completely retarded in how they handled heroes. They made a lot of really low skill ceiling heroes, then Genji, Tracer, Widow and arguabily McCree (left click is amazing but requires really good aim) who have a much higher skill ceiling than everybody else.
And they expect the meta to not be a stale pile of shit? Besides the tanks and supports, why pick anything else? The other hero who has a niche is Reaper as tank shredder and maybe Junkrat to create pressure, but why take a Junkrat when you can have ebic skirmishes with the enemy team which also will be filled with Tracer, Genji, McCree and Widow?

mccree's nerf made him unusable as a easy pick up counter to them, even tracer can get away from the fan with a sliver of health and genji can reflect a good part of it on you as soon as the stun ends
so unless you are good at aiming and headshotting them in the 0.75 second of stun you can't rely on him countering them
he became a soft counter to genji at best, their matchup is now very equal with a little advantage on genji

McCree is still deadly in up close encounters.
That stun cancels all ults at least temporarily too so it's good for Reapers trying to flank and tanks about to ult.
The best part is that the STUPID CUNT MEI only works up close and that's where McCree shines as well, so you can fan the hammer, roll, flash her to prevent her ice heal, and headshot her.

If a somewhat coordinated team (or a very persistent dva/roadhog) wants to kill your turrets, they probably will.
Kill zone doesn't usually work because someone like dva/roadhog can tank your turrets initial damage and then destroy them.
If you're playing symmetra right, you should almost always medal in eliminations (usually gold). You should have it set up so your turrets are always tagging the enemies for a few damage before the rest of your team can focus them. Symmetra can be a great elim whore

they wanted to make le epic esport heroes like tracer and genji or even widow who are completely overpowered on a kit standpoint and put hard counters to them so people could have a chance to deal with them since most heroes have a fairly low skill ceiling and won't be able to deal well with a great tracer or genji
then they nerf their counters

I usually start the game by trapping one of the three exits at the enemy spawn. 99% of the time, I somehow never get the right spawn. Sometimes they all come out the wrong side exit, sometimes they all shuffle out the front. The 1% of the time I do get it right, I get sniped or I get chased off by a Winston. So I respawn back into some idiot triggering the bear trap so that I can't execute the combo.
And then I spend all game throwing traps and shit at enemies and trapping health packs when they're all dead. I get like 10-15 player killstreaks by doing so but never the achievement. It is pure torture.
To add insult to injury, I'm starting to become a competent Junkrat landing more and more direct hits and getting concussion mine multi-kills and shit instead of being some stupid M1 spamming retard.
I do need to try more horizontal mine placements though, you're right. Why is this so stupidly hard?

Because McCree wasn't just a counter to Tracer and Genji, he was a counter to literally anything that got within a solid ten feet of him. I ended up seeing McCrees who would just run right into the firefight rather than flanking
I think they nerfed him in the wrong ways but to suggest he didn't need adjustment of any kind is asinine

Pick her whenever your team is getting stomped on the choke point before the 1st point on CP maps and the enemy has a Junkrat. This situation happens quite often for me and usually what happens is staggered suicides so your team will never wipe. I personally got it with 3 or 4 hours on her and no intention of getting it or even aware of it, so assumed it was pretty easy.

Oh they killed them alright, but I could definitely see that my turrets were a help when we got pushed back to the point. It was Anubis, so I set up one turret on the side of the bridge just before the point, and another on the wall next to it, to catch people jumping off from there, and then the rest around the point.
Every time the attackers would push they'd always be slowed by my turrets and my team would get that little more time to attack and have that little less health to deal with, then I'd run in and M1 any stragglers or their tanks down.
I'd just have to replace the ones around the point after every push because they'd get killed ion the normal fighting.
