It did a fantastic job at making every fucking character relatable, charming, fun, playful. It makes you love them and want to see them happy so badly.
Everyone I know who played this game, including myself, started out pretty "meh" for a little bit, and by the end were crying our eyes out. I haven't been able to do genocide, and only one of my friends managed to start and caved at Papyrus.

That Chara awakening in Frisk happens in any playthrough, and that depending on what you do throughout your run, thats what Chara learns its purpose to be. Genocide leads to Chara believing his purpose is power, while True Pacifist leads to Chara believing her purpose to be redemption. When you fight Asriel, Chara is there too, wracked with guilt over what they did to their brother. Also, when Frisk is being a pacifist and has to fight Asgore and Flowey, Chara is backing up Frisks attacks so they actually do damage.
