With a game that has as many options as Undertale does, not having a way to save Asriel makes it feel like something's missing. Like it's the same sort of "ALL HAPPY ENDINGS MUST BE BITTERSWEET, NO 100% HAPPY ENDINGS EVER BECAUSE MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE ADULTS SUCH AS MYSELF" that happened in Mass Effect 3. To a far, far lesser extent, of course, because Undertale is great. But it feels like a tiny little bit of that is going on.
Like... in any sort of book or movie or anything, a 100% happy ending is generally terrible, but in a fully interactive medium there should be a way to completely perfect it, if you try hard enough. Like I don't know, if there was some super circuitous path where you had to play the game a 100 times to see absolutely every variation, and then that unlocked the super double true transcendent perfect ending where you can save Asriel, that'd be fair.
