Alright /v/.

I'm not huge on the FPS genre when it comes to videogames, and I really can't get into a lot of modern games because most of them are FPS shooters. Shooters on controller just bother me. I played ONE on a mouse and keyboard way way back when And I did relatively okay.

So, I want to make amends, I want to start from ground zero and move up, starting with the most popular and well known, DOOM.

I have never played a DOOM game or any DOOM clones. I know absolutely nothing about them other then that they are for PC. But I'd like to give them an honest try.

What versions of each game are best? And how would I go about obtaining them? Are there working emulators? Do I have to buy through Steam?

I know nothing when it comes to setting up old PC games, any help would be appreciated.

The first step would be either pirating or buying Doom 1 or 2, I would recommend pirating or getting the wad files from someone else.

Then download GZDoom and put the files in there and launch the exe.

This guide should help ya.

tl;dr explanations:
-original Dooms being old DOS games, they don't run well on modern Windows systems. The Steam and GOG versions use DosBox, which gets the job done, but isn't optimal.
-There's tons of modern "source-ports", that run the original files (.WADs) through a fancy front software, making them work better on modern machines. Some of them are more feature-packed than others.
-Use Chocolate-Doom port for very "vanilla" experience, and ZDoom or GZDoom for mods, visual enhancements, and new additions.
-Doesn't matter where you get the .WADs of Doom 1 and 2, just get them. The "Doom 3: BFG Edition" ones are CENSORED though, so avoid them.

Ultra violence is the only difficulty you should play on.

GZDoom has a bit too much bullshit tacked on and enabled by default (jumping, y-Axis aiming, filters....) if you want to have a proper, vanilla-like experience at first. I'd go with Chocolate or ZDoom instead, just so that OP would not have to spend the first 10 minutes tweaking the settings.

He can just turn them off.

>>334709654

Pirating Pc games, is that just isntalled directly to the system? no DOS emulator or anything? Can windows 8 run DOOM on its own?

>>
>>334709949
Don't use DosBox, use Chocolate Doom for vanilla experience.

>I know absolutely nothing about them other then that they are for PC
lol, DOOM's been ported on just about every single computer-like system ever made!
Obviously PC is the ultimate, only proper way to play it.

Anyway, after yer done with D1/2/64, you really should check out Duke 3D and BLOOD as well. Douk has a great source-port as well, called eDuke32, but BLOOD unfortunately is only playable on DosBox at the moment.

After that, I guess you should hit the Half-Life series, starting with the original + expansions. Steam's the way to go with 'em, and they run butter smooth out of the box.

>>334709949
>Can windows 8 run DOOM on its own?
No. I think even the Windows 95 version is obsolete now, being a 16-bit program (modern OS'es only understand 32-bit, lowest).
>>
>>334709791
PrBoom+ works pretty well for vanilla too.

It plays better than Chocolate IMO, even though I grew up playing the DOS version

There's no point in not just playing Choco if you want full vanilla. If you don't, there's no point in not playing GZ. And no, turning off filtering is really fast and most gameplay wads require GZ anyway. Also vertical look is neat as fuck.

But GZdoom doesn't enable them by default.

>>334709949
Chocolate Doom IS the dos version, without having to deal with the bullshit that is Dosbox.

Chocolate lets you play doom like its 1996, 35fps cap, resolution limits, etc.

Zdoom is the most commonly used engine, Gzdoom is zdoom with a opengl backend that makes geometry not distort when you look up and down. Gzdoom lets you use zdoom's software renderer with a console command.

There is an argument for playing chocolate, as invisible enemies are not as invisible at high res, but gzdoom can replicate that by tweaking "fuzz" options.

Purist tier: Chocolate Doom 35 fps glory

Purist + Tier: Crispy Doom - low resolution but uncapped framerate pretty much

Modern-Vanilla: Gzdoom with jumping disabled and ALL texture filtering off, high resolution, high FPS, good times

Modern-Vanilla +: I do this usually, vertical look enabled, Autoaim off(autoaim in Doom aims up and down), pfx sound pack so sounds have some trebble to them, no jumping. Freelook can mess with the balance of shooting enemies above you and the rocket launcher's splash damage. Fuck it though, I like looking up and down. Uses Gzdoom because looking up and down (freelook) without a hardware renderer makes shit distort.

Remaster Tier: Modern Vanilla + with SmoothDoom which adds more frames to the animations while retaining vanilla gameplay

Full Retard Shitposter Tier: playing Brutal Doom and saying its a patch.
>>

Graphics and lines and such don't bother or deter me, I'm used to them. I'm rather play it how it was meant to be then add filters and such.
>>
>>334711038
Ultimate Doom is Doom 1 + some extra levels

Final Doom doesn't include Doom 1 and is comprised of two entirely different sets of levels: TNT Revilution and Plutonia, both are for experienced players only because of their difficulty
>>
>>334710939

>>
>>334711207

>>
>>334711038
Ultimate Doom is the original Doom release (episodes 1-3) plus an extra episode (4).

Final Doom is a pair of commercially released community-made mapsets (The Plutonia Experiment and TNT: Evilution) that used Doom 2 as a base.
>>
chocolate doom is for idiots
download gzdoom
turn off filtering if you're autistic
vertical look is absolutely fine, it actually plays better this way compared to vertical autoaim in the original (aside from the shitty doom2 endboss)
the only thing you shouldn't do is use jumping or crouching, doom wasn't designed for this and you can break maps by doing it
>>
>>334711298
Sounds good, what was ultimate for? I can't find it in DoS. Was it a later upgrade for PC?

also is 3 better vanilla or BFG?
>>
>>334711049
It was designed for the mouse. It had mouse support since day one.

>>334711038
just grab the Iwad pack from /vr/, your playthrough order is doom.wad (maybe skip episode 4 because it was done later and isn't as good as the others), doom2.wad, TNT, then Plutonia.

Plutonia is bullshit hard though, it'll make you a man, but I don't find it to be fun difficulty like alot of hard user maps.

Also, PLAY ON ULTRA VIOLENCE, its the official difficulty where shit is balanced.

>>334711253

Your source ports are pretty much Chocolate for 1996 nostalgia, Crispy for the look of Chocolate without some of the limits, and Gzdoom is a full on modern version of the engine.

All mods are made for Gzdoom nowadays.

There's a version of Gzdoom called Zandronum which is for multiplayer, it doesn't have the latest Gzdoom features because it has to incorporate them for netcode without breaking loads of shit.

Serious answer tho

You're a space marine on some moonbase where they're researching teleportation technology. An experiment suddenly manages to open a portal to hell, demons spill out, you're the only survivor. You go through the entire moonbase kicking demon ass only to get ambushed and get your ass handed to you. You wake up in another moonbase and go kick demon ass through that too. Then you discover that the second moonbase was actually on a floating island above hell and you died back when you got ambushed. So you climb down to hell and kick more demon ass until you find the baddie in charge of the whole invasion operation, and kick his ass too. Hell then decides it doesn't want to put up with your shit so it throws you out back on earth.

You get an entire two-second break until you realize demons are invading earth too. More importantly, they also killed your pet bunny, so you go and kick even more demon ass, eventually going back into hell and kicking the ass of one of Satan's pals so demons will stop invading earth too.

There, I just summarized the entire plot of Doom 1 and 2. Now go and play some motherfucking Doom.
>>
>>334712485

And that other mention prboom is a version of the engine that you only really need if you're playing something insane like nuts.wad with literally thousands of enemies on screen.

>>334721742

I chose whatever the first one was
>>
>>334722709
See, you just finished the introductory campaign.

The other ones will be bigger and more challenging.
>>
>>334722709
that's the first episode. It hasn't even begun.

You've got 3 more to go.

oh, okay.
>>
>>334709678
Fuck chocolate doom; use crispy doom
>>
Wait... WHAT.

So if I die i have to close the entire application? What the fuck.
>>
>>334723864
umm... no?
What the fuck are you doing, and are you OP?
>>
>>334723864
Yup, you fucked up.

If you die in this game, a demon will manifest through your computer and eat you. Grab a beer and say your prayers before the process is complete.
RIP in peace, OP.
>>
>>334724110
Yes, I died on the minotaur things throwing green fireballs and its not letting me respawn. I pressed enter, space click and everything and nothing.

It just put me back on the main menu and started me at the first level again
>>
>>334724298
Did you ever save?

After you die you respawn by pressing whatever thing you mapped to be the Shoot command.
>>
>>334723264
There are other Halo clones?
>>
>>334724535
No.. i figured it saved itself after every level since it never prompted me, was there a specific key for it?
>>
>>334724615
You pause and then you save.
Your problem is kinda weird though.

But you need an awful lot of handholding, OP.
I recommend you to close the web browser and use your brains a bit more; also check the options to see the control scheme, so you don't miss out of any possible customization or command options.
>>
>>334724615
>>334724298
no, by default Doom does not make saves.
It's all manual, "hard" saves, done via the ESC menu.

That being said, you SHOULD have the option to restart the level you died at, from the very beginning, with only the pistol, if you press one of the action keys. It's usually not the wisest choice though.
>>
>>334724946
Maaaaan.. SO I gotta start over?

Fuck this. I'll just go back to trying to stomach the last of us. playing antiquated games WITHOUT SAVING is only frustrating me more.
>>
>>334725152
Dude you can save the game whenever you want

Don't use chocolate doom either; use crispy doom. Chocolate doom is literally a meme

There is also nothing wrong with gzdoom and smooth doom. That's how millions of vanilla purists play.

OP here.

Please ignore the shitter who is falseflagging as me. I did finish the first episode and liked it a lot; I also started to play Brutal Doom right away, and I'm enjoying it even more than the original.
I can't believe that I missed out on this series.
>>
>>334726510
Name a few. The only one that comes to mind immediately is Republic Commando.
>>

>>
>>334729520
Horrible.
>>
Not strictly related to DOOM but what's the best way to play Blood? Is it to still put up with DOSBox? Any hopes for a new sourceport or actually good TC?
>>
>>334729520
It has a cool-looking cart.
>>
Jenesis is hands down my favourite megawad of all time. The levels are awesome and the music is amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qEjii5dFzY is my favourite from it
>>
>>334730702
I also forgot to mention Dark Tartarus. Jenesis and Dark Tartarus are my two favourite of all time
>>
>>334730702
That's a pretty good track actually
>>
>>334725152
Then play on gzdoom, it autosaves after every level

it's a fairly faithful port, better than some other console-ports of the mid 00's, but still pales in comparison to the PC original in all ways.
It's still a very impressive feat for SNES, and a fancy piece of history.

I so wanted the game as a kid, as I'd gotten to play a little of the OG Doom on my friend's PC, but the SNES port had disappeared from our local shops by the time I realized what it was.

nobody gave a single fuck back then. I was less than 10 when I first played the Doom, Douk, Resident Evil, Carmageddon, Mortal Kombat... etc.

And on the contrary to the popular believes at the time, I still haven't killed anyone. In fact, thanks to RESI, I later got into Silent Hill, which again got me interested in psychology, which helped me ace the related classes in HS, and then understand Pink Floyd's the Wall -film better, etc and so on.
