Qui Gon Jinn was a canon Grey Jedi, its why he wasn't on the council. He called himself a Jedi but was definitely grey and they knew it and he knew it, he believed in The One Force, not the standard teachings of the jedi.
Why else do you think a "Jedi" was tossing dice around, buying slaves, and continually talking about "living in the moment". If he was anyone but Qui Gon who they trusted a shitload by then he would've been exiled. There was extra pressure about his Grey status because:

I just have no worries about Rey's character at all and don't even care what they do with her at this point. She beat the shit out of Kylo after having never wielded a lightsaber before and mastered complex force powers without being taught them.
Even if she was some trained young jedi who's parents got slaughtered or something I just don't see where she could go from here that would be interesting in the slightest unless they actually made her become Snoke's apprentice and Kylo rejoined the light side.
Make the rest of her arc be her arrogantly thinking she can save the universe by herself (because it seems like she honestly can at this point) and then she gets her ass handed to her and goes to the dark side to try and become more powerful or something.
