Most kids who grew up on the NES are between 32-42 right now. The older kids and adults that played it are even older.
A lot of them are no longer as technically inclined or into gaming as they used to be, they probably have less free time from having careers and possibly kids. So emulating or making emulation boxes is out of the picture.
This kind of person wants something they can plug into their TV and play, show their kids the games they played, maybe play a few minutes of it when their buddies come over and go nostalgic over it.

I don't mind it. They've been releasing plug and play vintage games for a long time in stores, and those never bothered me. I owned my NES up until about 2003 before I finally admitted the old box wasn't playing those games anymore, and I lost the wires for it at the time too.
Sure, getting the real console and games is always the better option. So is playing on a CRT. But I don't feel a desire to spend the time, effort, or money to acquire those things, hook them up, rearrange all media center, just to have the authentic NES play the way I did back in 1988.
Will I buy one? Probably not. But it's nice for what it is: a cheap plug-and-play system that will sell as a stocking stuffer this holiday season.
