You might think the games play the same if you're more of a casual player. But Melee has a bunch of weird glitches/oversights with its physics engine which allows for some really fast movement and attacks. And since players can move so quickly, they can rush down and attack faster, making for some slick combo-heavy battles.
The real big glitch/exploit is called "wavedashing." It allows a player to move quickly across a stage, but in a standing position. So players can move, and theyr are not limited to dash attacks or jumping out of a run. You can move and freely grab, tilt, smash, jump, crouch, etc.
I used to think the games were all super similar until I learned of wavedashing and other glitches/exploits. You should google them, boot up Melee, and try out some of the glitches. They're really neat and may help you understand why so many consider Melee the black sheep of the franchise.
No other 15-year-old game is still played like Melee is, and there's good reason for it.

Which word is preferred? Just simply using "tech" would alienate new players, and "glitch" alienates the experienced crowd of Melee players. Is "exploit" acceptable, or should I use another term when writing about Melee?

Wavedashing is jumping and then airdoding towards the ground and letting momentum carry you, all of these mechanics are working as intended, and the devs even said they knew about it before they released the game and thought nothing of it. What part of this is a glitch to you?

My friend absolutely wrecks my shit everytime we play together. The best I can do is just build up damage and claim atleast one stock, but I rarely if ever win an actual match against her.

Shulk's moves are incredibly laggy his only way of approaching is with leggy Fairs and Bairs stay out of range and then punish him when he lands. Shulk's smash attacks and very easy to punish because they are really slow. Learn the timing on them. The only time he isn't shit in neutral is when he is in speed mode. Whenever he goes buster just camp with arrows he has no way of getting to you safely.
His recovery went not in jump mode is VERY linear. He's INCREDIBLY easy to gimp during it.
