One thing I liked about spyro 1 was there was no back tracking. In 2 and 3 you had some areas which you couldn't access until you purchased the ability in the next world, or had the right animal buddy.

Spyro 1 actually had 35 levels. 2 had 29 and 3 had 36 iirc.
Love the trilogy, great games all of them.
1 is me presonal top though, its clear simple and consise. No buddies or backtracking, no abilities, just you the level and your creativity in reaching ever more redicolous hidden areas.
The others are great but they dont make you feel like your getting out of the level the same way 1 did, I also agree with the anon saying the backtracking is not great in later titles. I used to prefer 2 over 1 but now its 1 over 2. Probably just easier to replay 1 so I enjoy going back to it more, also the levels and worlds were top.

YotD is the best of the series IMO. The first had a calm, otherworldly feel to it but didn't feel very alive. The second game improved the mechanics but I wasn't a fan of the worlds and a lot of the characters. But then YotD just got everything right.

God why did later spyros have so may bad glitches and programming flaws, granted a lot of them are helpful for speedrunners or secret seekers but for an average player the games just fell apart more each title with that one after the OG trilogy being especially terrribad.

I've never seen that happen, but I've had a unique glitch of my own, where I entered the cloud level, and all the character models were fucked up, and had weird polygon "spikes". I've never been able to recreate that glitch, so I don't know what the fuck happened.

I think why the other anon might've called it a tech demo was because the expected staple for fans of the series (since 2 and 3 has this) is having an npc in every level mixed with two characters that follow you around in the story. In the first game, there's only Spyro saving the dragons. In the sequels, Spyro always has a companion and there's always a side-mission with every level. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it leaves less going with the one with the curiosity of these lands. In Spyro 1, I liked how there was no NPC to tell you about their bullshit story, especially since they're always talking to you and telling you what to do. When you see a level, you feel more immersed because it's only up to you to decide what is going on. For instance, in the 3rd main hub world (the one with the huts) I like to believe the reason it looks so toxic and broken down is because the green [spoiler[whatever the fuck theyre called[/spoiler]came and killed everyone in the village.

You still pretty much had that in the second and third games. While the story would occasionally pop in to remind of things, it never forced you do things in a very linear manner. Hell, nonlinearity was pretty much Insomniac's bag until the fourth or so Ratchet and Clank game, where they pretty much dropped the idea of having some choice in a level and only offered one path from point A to B. Makes me glad they brought back some of the nonlinear feel for the remake, and hopeful they'll keep it like that once they make another R&C game.
Of course, I was tickled pink when I saw that article about them possibly being interested in trying a new Spyro game if they were given the option.

I think it was possible to go into the super charge backward and hop up over the little walls around the supercharge, if you did it just right. It was tricky, that plus getting down the sharp left turn that you'd have to do immediately after, and honestly just going down the route is easier when I replay it. But damn does it feel good to break the game and skip things.
