Fuck that, what are some REAL gems that literally nobody knows about?
Nobody knows about them I guess
Lots of Wii games stick out to me in particular. Sin and Punishment 2, pic related, Pandora's Tower, and maybe The Last Story are all stand out titles to me.

From the Depths
ExaminaCan anyone suggest a game to me? I've totally lost hope in FPS gaming and I've been playing FPS games as far back as the first DOOM. I want an MMO but all MMOs I've played were imperfect, Archeage had a shitty labor system, Tera had no story and shit team fights, Rift was dead and boring but had nice class systems.

This game is actually beautiful in terms of art design. Most I've wanted to explore levels in a long time.
Alien Soldier. A run and gun bossfights-r-us game made by Treasure. Includes favourite returning bosses from Gunstar Heroes and is balls hard as well. And even with it on the Virtual Console, nobody I know has even heard of it.

I loved Lost Kingdoms 2, it's a shame I can never find a ROM for it that works. They're usually glitchy and have the music cut out.

Heatseeker was pretty cool. Surprisingly good use of motion controls. Also you can fly an SR-71 armed with guns and a nuke, and it can take off from an aircraft carrier, so that's...something.

>>344577360

American ports have been harder than Japanese versions since the beginning of time. The vast majority of games are harder in America. Japan doesn't like challenge and difficulty.

Nigga those are games WE know because we're fucking nerds who love those games. These games ARE overlooked. Ask a co-worker next time if he knows what god hand is. then ask him if he played skyrim.
Also generally underrated games:
>recettear
>killing floor 1
>lots of older star wars games (have a huge fan following but are not very main stream)
>basically every good game before 2005. (same as above. Nerds know them, love them. But vidya was not such a mainstream thing so lots of people missed good a lot of good shit)
Fuck you could even list Deus Ex and VtM:Bloodlines here. 2 games that are "must play" for any RPG fan, but due to their age I doubt that very many people actually played them
>Fallout NV is somehow not nearly as popular as 3 and 4 despite being better than both of them combined.
>Hacknet
>Metro
>Legacy of kain series.
>frozen synapse
>Ziggurat
>Metal Gear: Rising

Depends on the genre and whose localizing. I'm basing this on my experience, not just final fantasy. Americans often got the short end of the stick from NES, SNES, and Genesis days. Japan only became hyper casualized once smartphones became a thing.

Can't agree with Contact because the story generally makes no sense, depending on an Earthbound-like "lol it's so random" attitude to pass off the fact that the story is a piece of shit. The gameplay is very basic, basically just auto-attack shit. It has some neat ideas but none of them are executed well, like skill trees. You have to actually grind for hours before you even reach the end of a single skill tree, and the ability gained is never worth it. You can beat the game without ever even getting close to maxing out a skill. Plus they consume so much valuable green bar you're not gonna use any high level skills anyway. Just my two cents... also the game is painfully popular.
8 Eyes.
Some of my favorite music on the NES and its just so damn charming.
Beat all 3 modes three times over.
The World Ends With You. Generally considered to be really good, but definitely overlooked. It deserved much more success than it did. Literally the best RPG, both story-wise and mechanically in the last 2 decades.
Daikatana. Played it recently (with the newest patches) and beat it. Had a gamebreaking bug at one point but using cheats solved it. The first chapter of the game is the most frustrating (the sidekick AI part), but it's still an extremely fun and creative first person shooter. Have some patience for it and it's a great game.

Nigga the Idea of sailing wasn't bad. It's the fact that you spend 7 minutes sailing in a straight fucking line doing FUCK ALL to get to the next Island.

Momo 1-3 are a Cave Story hack with an emphasis on trying to do a no-hit run. Characters have projectiles with some variation (you get more than one option in 3, 1, is all projectiles with no melee), can attack continuously without pausing like it's Megaman Zero, speed is pretty quick even without a dash mechanic, there's some enemy/projectile deflection shit.
Momo 4 tried to slow things down (presumably following the "Dark Souls is slow, ergo slow is good" train of thought- You can't deflect projectiles, you can't unlock meaningful variations on your projectile or melee attacks, there are limitations on the melee attack string and projectile charge, and the only way to move quickly is a dash the game couldn't be designed around because it's nonlinear and allows you to collect that upgrade last.
Meanwhile, all the shit you'd expect from the early games is still here. So now you're getting hit by shit you used to be able to deflect but can't, boss fights take forever because you used to strike continuously and now can't, etc. And the added mechanics to compensate suck. The roll isn't really tuned at all for the length enemy attacks take and can lead to you getting hit after dodging something, so jumping is almost always better. The charge shot doesn't retain if you move certain ways, so spammed fire is almost always better. Hitstun is inconsistent on bosses and melee obscures the boss animations, so projectiles are almost always better.
It feels like the dude got so preoccupied with trying to be "original" that he forgot that his new shit didn't gel with his highly derivative old design style. On top of that he kept graphics from Momo 3 in 4, despite the sprites all being upsized, so it just looks weird and laughable in spots.
Doubly so for the Japanese-only Sega Saturn/PS1 version.
"combat" was pretty shit but the racing felt great
>>344579928
Yes, but the fucking atmosphere of that game, and there was rarely ever nothing to look at. It was a veritable feast for the eyes. I'm thinking that the main reason /v/ hates the sailing is because 90% of people were young and had a "I need to kill something every 90 seconds or I get bored" mindset."
Honestly, everyone keeps telling me that they hated the "Fetch the 8 Triforce pieces" quest, but I found it to be my favourite. "What's that, game? You want me to go explore every inch of this beautifully crafted world? Fuck it, I was gonna do that anyway, but now I get rewarded for it."
This is literally my favorite game of all time, and nobody even replies to me any time I post it in /v/, and I've posted it many times.
Play for comfy.
>>344580519
Yeah but the reason they didn't bring jap mario 2 was because they thought americans weren't good enough.
It was good enough to warrant an HD version recently, but I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned on /v/ before.

And yeah I think so too. If you spend time on /v/ chances are you're sick of specc ops threads and have seen a couple thousand since it came out. But normies? Fuck no. Outside of vidya related circles, barely anyone has played that game. You have to take the mainstream shit like CoD and Skyrim. Next to their popularity Specc ops doesn't even show up on the graph. so these ARE underrated games. If OP wants games underrated by /v/s standards you'll have to look for some REAL obscure shit like King's Field which only recently got some attention due to being the "proto souls" games. chances are if a game is any kind of good, /v/ already knows about it.

While it is obscure and all, I have never played a slower, more boring, easier and overall weeber game than this one. This game managed to make me regret pirating it, as hilarious as it sounds. I have no clue on how they did it, since I actually didn't dislike luminous arc that much, but they just straight up copied it and made it worse. Even the witches design is worse ffs. What were they thinking.

JF is great, but the sequel is definitely my favorite. There was a third, but it never made landfall in the west, and it changed up the formula, not very good.

7th Saga came over with enemies that were 4x stronger across the board.
Contra was easier in Japan. Hard Corps had a lifebar in Japan.
Bayou Billy's difficulty was made into batshit insane compared to Mad City
Ninja Gaiden 3 had unlimited continues in Japan
Contra 3 US has no cheat codes unlike Japan
DMC3's first release here had Japan's Hard mode as our Normal mode
There's a lot of examples of games being made harder, just like there are examples of games being made easier too.

During the sailing there where LOTS of moments where there was nothing to see at sea. You just kept the button pushed to get 5 or so square to the north and sometimes all you see in the time is bad weather coming up, or some asshole animals trying to kick you off your ship. Yeah maybe sometimes you found a pirate lookout but that was pretty much nothing of note.

>>344580706
Kinda, but that's really overgeneralizing it. Considering the U.S. had just gotten over the vidya crash it wouldn't have been wise to bring over a sequel to the most popular game around that a) visually looked identical b) made little innovation over the original and c) had extremely bullshit difficulty. Regardless this has nothing to do with the conversation since it didn't get localized in the first place and we're specifically talking about difficulty changes in localized games.
This game.

Not even close. Honestly, that scene was fucking laughable because you didn't even know they were there until afterwards. What kind of shit writer expects the player to feel remorseful in a situation where the player LITERALLY has no choice and you don't even know the people effected? Terrible fucking writing and then """"twist"""" ending was so transparent that even a Down's Syndrome sufferer like yourself likely solved it 2 hours into the game. Two hours, mind you, if half of the game since this piece of shit is only 4 hours long.

because it's a great game just like Mario bros 1.
added to that there isn't much bullshit you can make up about the game. Like "why is this guy behind bars" in Mario Kart, or "what's written under this statue? why is this city under water with such weird music?" in Mario 64. or the "deepest lore" "mario clone comes up, original mario dies, clone stays" bullshit. Not even very many interesting facts like that super mario bros 3 is a play. or that super mario bros 2 was just a re-sprite version of Doki Doki Panic because the Jap M2 was considered "too hard".

>A Stand Alone Complex can be compared to the emergent copycat behavior that often occurs after incidents such as serial murders or terrorist attacks. An incident catches the public's attention and certain types of people "get on the bandwagon", so to speak. It is particularly apparent when the incident appears to be the result of well-known political or religious beliefs, but it can also occur in response to intense media attention. For example, a mere fire, no matter the number of deaths, is just a garden variety tragedy. However, if the right kind of people begin to believe it was arson, caused by deliberate action, the threat that more arsons will be committed increases dramatically.
>What separates the Stand Alone Complex from normal copycat behavior is that there is no real originator of the copied action, but merely a rumor or an illusion that supposedly performed the copied action. There may be real people who are labeled as the originator, but in reality, no one started the original behavior.
It actually means something in the Anime, Anon.

No, this is the default "obscure" RPG. Much like the games mentioned on the OP.
Sub Culture motherfucker. It's a comfy-ass action/trading game about a race of tiny humanoids living under the sea. Explore in your sub, find cigarette butts, bottlecaps, and other stuff that the big folk chuck underwater. Take it to a town, buy and sell, find the good prices. At towns you can also take on missions and stuff to do with a war that's currently going on between two factions. Upgrade your sub with weapons, fight pirates. Explore deep trenches for riches. Really cosy stuff.
>>344581387

Did you heard about Dawn of magic? Pretty good game, and devs was very ambitious about making it popular in the different regions.

Doesn't help that 70% of the Saturn's library was Japan exclusive.
Man, if Sega actually localized the games, the Saturn wouldn't be seen as a joke like it currently is. It's library easily rivals the PS1 and N64

Yeah, it's all good
Man I know more than 400 replies deep into this thread is gonna mean this gets buried, but Vangers: One For the Road is one of the greatest games no one has ever played.
Its an ambitious voxel powered open world driving RPG made in Russia way back in 1998. The game has an incredibly weird presentation and is filled with tons of confusing vocabulary and mechanics, but once you wrap your head around those its a fucking legitimately great game.
First and foremost is the completely insane high-concept sci-fi backstory that delves into the truly alien, while still evoking a very classical Russian sci-fi feel. You really do get the feeling of being dropped into a completely unfamiliar place, and as you slowly figure things out there is an amazing sense of atmosphere and place that very few games manage to capture. The quest system and AI are quite elaborate for the time as well, and AI characters can even get past you in the story.
Its just such a weird gem of a game, and seems like the perfect undiscovered cult title that people here would go nuts over, so it honestly kind of shocks me that more people haven't played it.
Unlike a lot of weird cult games (like the awesome Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, for example), the game was updated to work on modern versions of windows and is available on steam. Its absolutely worth the time, one of the truly great undiscovered games.

>Plot[edit]
Mining surveyor and former war hero Nicholas Conner (voiced by Lance Henriksen), returns to his space station known as the Forsetti Station to find it overrun by a hostile, previously unknown alien species known simply as The Race. Most of the crew members are dead, Nick's fiancee is trapped on the far side of the base, and he soon discovers that the entire station is slowly degenerating into an alien hive. Using his war experience and a large arsenal of weapons, Nick must fight through a group of hostile enemies to locate survivors on the station who can help him find Samantha.
>The story is set in the year 2508, and begins when the USG Ishimura (石村?, lit. "Stone Village"), a "planetcracker" starship (designed to extract ore in large masses of billions of tons), sends out a distress signal to the Concordance Extraction Corporation (CEC) during a mining operation on the planet Aegis VII. The CEC dispatches the USG Kellion to investigate. After a guidance system malfunction crashes the Kellion into the Ishimura dock, the crew tries to seek other means of transport.[12] As they explore what appears to be an abandoned ship, they are attacked by grotesque monsters, killing off all but ship systems engineer Isaac Clarke, Commander Zach Hammond, and Computer Specialist Kendra Daniels. Hammond notices that many of the ship's systems are failing; he and Kendra direct and assist Isaac in fixing them to keep them alive for rescue.[13][14]

Pretty much. The only thing F3 has over NV is that some of the radio music is subjectively better. I enjoy the sort of swing stuff they have there. Don't get me wrong, NV music is still great and very much unique but I think I just prefer 3s radio that bit more.

There are a lot of games that were good, got a bit of a attention but were then forgotten. Lots of DS and PS1 games fall into this category because there were just so many games in their libraries. These tend to get rediscovered eventually.
Games like Aliens: Infestation, Infinite Space, Legendary Starfy, Echo Night... etc.
I have a feeling that the 16-bit consoles are a gold mind of hidden gems that have yet to be rediscovered.
There are also a lot of good games that didn't get a lot of attention at the time that they released, and are now too dated to be noteworthy. Pic related.
