caveman really doesn't give a shit, i love it. there's this bid war or lottery to get the klonoa plushie, and he expresses at one point it would be cool to get it and that he should probably donate. at some later point, someone asks him if he's gonna donate, and he's like

Mario Maker race was fun and the format was better than the last one
Tasbot was super disappointing, no wizardy mindfucks like pokemon plays twitch or SMB3 (?) plays Mario Maker.
All in all the event itself is ok, but for the runs, I find long (2 or 3h+) 100% runs or glitchless to be boring, I'd rather have more short or glitched/tricky games than a long run of FFVI or whatever.

It was the third day of AGDQ 2015 -- the day that CavemanDCJ would finally prove to everyone that Floating Runner was speedrunnable. Blueglass once again failed to complete Ecco without the debug menu, the video cables were fucked up, and Mayushii was the donation reader at the time; it was already beginning to seem like a terrible day for speedrunning.
As Caveman walked to the couch, carrying his PSX and his memegame, he noticed Chibi sitting there. Surely this had to be a mistake. Any retard could've seen after the last GDQ that this was a horrible match. Chibi smiled up at him, his teeth covered in Cheeto residue, dark energy emanating from the collar around his neck.

he said before Caveman could complain. The latter simply responding with a sigh and a shake of his head before setting up his game.
The run itself was going somewhat well -- he had only fallen once or twice, hadn't died, and was nearing Zaurer. He was so focused on the game that he didn't hear Mayushii read the donation comment,

A smile crept upon Chibinekodemyx's face. He stood up and proclaimed out loud,

The room was completely silent, barring the sound of Blueglass's clapping. Chibi knew it was his time. All his new, hip memes would surely make him seem cool in front of the master memer himself.
Caveman let a small groan escape his throat as he heard Chibi meme over and over. As he heard Chibi ask how Bowser got into the game, the DCJ decided he couldn't take it anymore. The frustration -- the tension -- was too much to handle. Throwing the greasy controller across the room, he turned to Chibi, snarling. Caveman kicked the chubby memer off the couch and lunged at him.
Screams erupted from the people in the room. The AGDQ staff tried to cut the stream, but they were too incomptent to handle OBS.

CavemanDCJ fucked Chibi for what seemed like forever, tearing apart his anus completely. Eventually, he ejaculated, spreading his seed throughout the Let's Player's insides. As he came, he screamed to the heavens,

ive watched every gdq up until this one. at this point ive seen too many of the same runs too many times, grown tired of the format, heard too many of the same tired jokes, and heard HOYP more than enough.
it's pretty pointless, almost all of the runners there are autismo neet nerds that are playing their game 24/7 on their twitch channel and you can tune in at your own leisure in a more comfy stream rather than an incredibly bland restrictive marathon atmosphere.

Three of the runners, including two WR holders, died, and the guy who was still up and coming and at his first GDQ took things a little slower and won. Funny enough one of the WR was way ahead of everyone else, tearing into Mother Brain's second form - and then died at the cutscene because he had under a total of 300 health, thus dooming his run.
The newbie refused to get hit even once since that's all it took to knock him into the exact same situation.

Honestly all this shows is that 90% of speed running is willingness to reset after having wasted an hour (sometimes multiple hours) on what ends up being a bad run.
The WR's are all insane risk risk risk with sometimes not even very much payoff, but you have to do them to get the fastest time. It's more surprising that we don't see more critical failures in SGDQ.

The community determines it. This has been common consensus since 2014. The focus, in the transition from 2013 to 2014, shifted from speedrunners coming together for a live marathon to speedrunners coming together to represent a charity in a live marathon format. Most of the real fun is relegated to the backrooms because of this, and the runs and runners you see are much more - self-admittedly by the GDQ staff - influenced by which people want to see which runs.
I understand what you're trying to say, but I've been attending these events for a while now and I'm pretty autistic about what happened to them. They're still fun and I appreciate the work the staff does, but they took this event in a specific direction.

Before it started someone posted in the SGDQ thread on /v/ that they were going to have a SM64 4 man surprise race.
Immediately when it started someone said there would be a ton of big number Anonymous donations.
Wouldn't you know it, about 50,000 bux were donated by Anonymous in $1,000 to $5,000 amounts.
I'm not saying I subscribe to it that it was totally rigged. But its clear that the surprise incentive was planned from the start. The runners even casually mentioned one of them was a 120 star speedrunner and they had spent the last few days teaching him techniques for the 70 star speedrun which is slightly different.
So the Surprise was planned. That's indisputable. What is really suspicious is how many people were suddenly dropping g's with no name like it was nothing. Some people believe it was a shill (like the real thing) to convince others to donate heavily.
Whatever it was, I can tell you one thing that I"m absolutely positive of. That race would have happened either way and was planned from day 1.

That's actually somewhat accurate. GDQ is run by a small group of speedrunners and former speedrunners. Mike Uyama, Cool Matty, and Sumichu are the highest-up. In 2014, Mike announced he had been contracted by the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Since then, the event has slowly become more and more "professional", approaching convention status. GDQ is a limited liability company in the state of Virginia (I think it's Virginia), with staff, paid wages, etc. That wasn't always the case.
tl;dr GDQ is run like a company by a small group of people who have slowly made it more professional at the cost of casual fun and certain other elements of the old marathons. It's just different, I guess.
I just meant that the community has long-since determined that these events aren't hat they used to be, but that's alright by most of the runners regardless. These events used to be more or less volunteer-run back before 2014, although some of the budget was covered by outside sources I think.
