It's quite plausible that this is simply the 'maintain good PR' move from someone who is probably sick of having to deal with private matters in the public eye.
This is literally the "I don't want to talk about it any more, and if I continue to harp on things then I will be seen as an inflammatory asshole no matter how justified I am, so I have to offer nothing but bland platitudes" position that he has to take.
While the drama is entertaining for us, I imagine it's much less so for him.
