Many Japanese idioms or jokes don't translate into english at all, which the localization team has to make calls on how to translate it and usually most try to translate into something that means something to english speaking audience.

I think what's bad about this is not only is it 8-4, which is known for needlessly removing important plot elements for normalfag marketing, but the fact that there's news posts saying "THEY'RE DOING A LOT OF CHANGES"
If you have media commenting on the changes at all, you fucked up. Keep in mind that even Wikipedia keeps a handy list of everything 8-4 has had a hand in, and almost every title I played with 8-4 handling localization feels like it's missing a good chunk of story.
I've not touched MN9 yet since I regret backing it, but I don't think that had much story to begin with, but I felt like shit was missing from a lot of these games when I played them, and it's just disappointing.
Story isn't as important as gameplay, but it's still pretty important to make the game not seem so fucking dumb.
That said, I might as well get Automata. I have had it preordered for roughly six months already, and 8-4 already fucked up the past two games in the series. Any context is missing from before shouldn't suddenly be important now unless they go full fucking turbokike on the plot.

It can be done for shady agendas, but it is always necessary to change words to make a proper understandable translation. These things are always called LOCALIZATION for a reason.
Some changes in dialogue need to be made to translate anything from one language to another, especially when it comes to japanese, as those guys have unique words that can perfectly describe the personality, backstory, sex and even the place of origin of the speaker.
If you want to get pristine unchanged dialogues, then you'll have to learn japanese.

For example, in Advent Children, when Cloud is shown to be still hung up about Aerith's death, Tifa expressed her frustration by making the sound for something dragging on the ground, "zuru zuru zuru zuru." How the fuck would you translate that into English directly? it's a matter of how much can be physically changed by the western publisher. in a 3D game, it's extremely easy to stretch a texture over cleavage or make a new costume texture to slap on the base model.
