I can buy turning shifting into a power of friendship device since everyone other than Phi, Sigma and Carlos needs to have others around them to pull it off. It does cheapen VLR considerably since Carlos never had any training at all but at least it makes sense.
What I really don't really get is why Delta needed to bother with any of the conditioning other than ensuring that he and Phi would be born. The core cast would've gone after the fanatic if he just flat out told them about him (and in what little of the epilogue that made it into the game, they aren't even totally sure if he can be believed anyway so it's not like making them suffer through the timelines made them believe him more or something).
Maybe it would've helped if the budget hadn't been diverted to 2 seasons of DR3 airing at the same time and we'd actually have complex motives instead of a complex meme.

I think what the series needs now is a clean sweep. A completely new start with new characters. No fucking cameos. There are so many nonsensical things in the game just to cover plot holes, like the alien stuff and "mind hacks". Not to mention that it was completely americanized, had uninspiring and few puzzles, and some boring character designs that had the same behaviour patterns as the previous games.
And what was it with the happy endings? Why the obnoxious fanservice? Mira would never spend her entire fucking life in prison on her own volition. Carlos miraciously cured his sister. Happy marriage for Akane and Junpei.
I hope that means its the end.
I enjoyed it because of the the characters I knew from the previous games, but I wont enjoy the next one. If I learn that the "terrorist" actually put together a nonary game and our brave heroes go to the rescue, i'll hang myself.

999 was great as a self-contained game, I think it would have been better if the other games were thematically similar but not directly (or at least, not overtly) related.
