Ark. Best one besides Turok.

Are there games that feature ACTUAL dinos? None of this Jurassic Park fanfic shit.

I .. Fuck. Turok?

Damn there really is a shortage of good dinosaur games.

Dino Crisis?
>>
>>343475245
Dino Crisis is pretty good, but I don't know why survival horror and dinosaurs don't mix very well in my opinion, not to mention Dino Crisis was basically a Resident Evil reskin with dinosaurs. Hope Capcom remakes that game one day.

Most non-avian dinosaur species weren't fluffy.

Tyrannosaurs aren't a part of the majority, though.

I got it for free selling gems during whichever winter sale introduced those. It's really cool because it shows you the background of the park and some different dinosaurs. It feels like Jurassic Park and this was before Telltale was up its own ass, so there's no illusion of choice.

Dunno if it's worth buying though. Just watch it.
>>

Despite this looking awful as a still, Jurrasic Park still holds up in motion.

Anyway, as for the topic at hand, there aren't any good dinosaur games. It's as simple as that.

There are skin imprints from dozens of dinosaurs, and most are pebbled or scaly. There's a reason they're depicted that way.

Only small theropods would've needed feathers as insulation against the cold. Even something like T-Rex was massive enough to retain bodyheat through size.

Is playing Turok 2008 worth it?

I persisted through Turok Evolution, if that's any indication of what "worth it" may mean.
>>
Honestly Ark is pretty dank. Just play singleplayer (although it has issues) or buy a server, lock it and play with your friends. It has plenty of PvE and quite a bit of gameplay without PvP at all. Dungeons and loot, etc. There's a lot of grinding in it though, but you can change all that in server settings if you feel it's too slow.

No. When evidence about presence or absence of feathers exists, all dinosaurs within Coelurosauria have had them (covering all major clades). However, there's positive evidence that shows sauropods and at least most other Saurischian dinosaurs didn't have them. The same goes for the other main branch of Dinosauria, Ornithischians, and evidence of any kind filaments (not necessarily homologous to Coelurosaurian feathers) is limited to a few species (Psittacosaurus, Kulindadromeus, Tianylong and a few others) and there's positive evidence that shows many major groups didn't have them.

The development team has spent three years working their asses off to get the current alpha build on their free time for zero dollars just because they love dinosaurs, I think it's in good hands.

At worst I'm out $15 and I consider it a fair gamble for what looks like an amazing potential product.

Evolution at least retains some of the weird 90's stuff of the original games. 2008 is just a military shooter where dinosaurs sometimes appear. It's got a couple cool bosses like a spidertank, giant worm, and the final one, but it's still pretty bland and missable.

You're absolutely right, that would be great, but Capcom probably wouldn't do something like that because they think Dino Crisis is not a good selling franchise, therefore not worth the investment.

Whatever I've gathered from pop science literature (most recently Tyrannosaur Chronicles by David Hone, that one was in the more academic side of things but pop science nonetheless, no hundred pages long list of references or too technical language), paleontology blogs and few scientific papers that really piqued my interest.

It's not my own field but I'd dare to say I'm well-read for an amateur.

Depends on what we're talking about. On many of them in current paleoart the feathers might actually be under-exaggerated - ceratopsians, for example, were likely covered in quills.

Pic related is as accurate as is possible for us to get, right down to the exact actual coloration and patterns (the specimen was so well-preserved scientists could see melanosomes under a microscrope to figure out the colors).

Jurassic Park still has the most convincing CG in films and it was among the first attempts at it.

How was this allowed to happen?

If I'm correct, the CG was handled by george and berg directly hands on with scientists and tech people.

We've since had 2 decades of tech progress and leagues of artists.

Shows that modern CG needs people of actual vision and knowledge instead of art backgrounds to get things to look real.

Jurassic's CG is the best simply because of GOD TEIR compositing skill.
They used the exact perfect amount of motion blur and velocity for the animation, the right material and lighting, right animation and feel of movement, right colour grading, levelling, everything to put it into the scene properly..
They did their absolute utmost to make it look as real as possible. The single biggest fuckup is always motion blur in modern CG. Always always incorrect and never matches the camera filming it's composited into.
>>
>>343477619
>Long answer
Warm-blooded and cold-blooded are inaccurate terms.

If you want to get more technical, there are homeotherms (organism maintains constant temperature), poikilotherms (organism's temperature varies to a considerable degree), endotherms (the heat is generated by the animal) and ectotherms (heat is primarily gained from outside sources rather than generated by the organism). For example, bats are poikilothermic endotherms while tunas are homeothermic ectotherms.

Now, by measuring growth rates it has been concluded dinosaurs had growth rates equal or even exceeding that of mammals and modern birds so they had "warm-blooded" metabolism. However, as adults dinosaurs were generally speaking big and due to their low surface to volume ratio they would have struggled NOT to maintain a constant body temperature (gigantothermy) and it's very much possible their metabolic rates changed during the course of their life cycle and that adults were ectotherms.

>Short answer
They were active animals that could live in cold climates and didn't need to bask in the sun to warm up or anything. I think that's what you're really asking.

Do you know any 5-ft frogs?
>>
>>343479152
During the Mesozoic there was a great variety of marine reptiles, including long-necked plesiosaurs. However, they are not dinosaurs. Hell, they're about as closely related to mammals as they are to dinosaurs.

If you're thinking of old depictions of saurpods living in the swamps or such like, that idea is antiquated. Most animals can swim and sauropods probably could too (indeed, due to their pneumatic bones similar to those of modern birds - as much as 90% of their volume could be air - they certainly would have floated all right) but water wasn't their natural habitat.
>>
>>343479250
wait explain this to me
>>
>>343479447
They wanted to be more realistic with JP3, JW directly went back to the roots of JP1 and 2 which is why you have Wong teasing the viewers on it in JW talking about making them look "cooler".
>>
You guys hear that rumor that the Jurassic World game was uncancelled? I'd be surprised if they didn't try to monetize it in a bigger way than that mobile game, what with it being the #2 movie of 2015, but I doubt that game will come out.

I'll still buy it even though Jurassic World was dogshit

>just a Lego game and shitty Battlefront shallow tier BF game for Star Wars

Seriously what the fuck, things weren't like this 10 years ago.
>>
>>343479204
left looks lower resolution, but that's the only real problem. the dinosaur in the background behind the one in front looks pretty good.

the right image looks like some gallery of enemies in a video game. like you go to an extras section on the main menu, then you see 3D models of every enemy in the game (think of trophies in super smash bros.)

so he's right, jurassic park does look better than jurassic world. which is very sad for modern cg.
>>
>>343479596
It's really just a technicality of classification thing. They are classified as aquatic reptiles rather than dinosaurs because they're more closely related to turtles than long-necked dinosaurs you might associate them with.

They're still badass prehistoric monsters that were around at the same time.

>>343479873
I'm assuming this isn't bait because so many people hold this opinion. It was done entirely without heart, and ran down a predictable checklist of 'things a blockbuster needs to have'. Lost world was great criticize it without the argument that the heroes are jerks or that T-Rex in San Diego was 'retarded' and the third, though cheap and comparatively bad, still had heart. I actually loved Trespasser. I wasn't into gaming news and shit when they were advertising how it was the next big thing and didn't deliver but it felt like an adventure to me. I just wish we could get some sort of spiritual successor or remake where the enemies and dinosaurs felt dangerous. Attenborough's monologues made that game for me.

I also really loved Carnivores. The carnivores were dangerous, fast, and quiet when they knew you were there and always had me checking around myself.

I'd really like an open or semi-open world survival fps without all the typical bullshit tagged on the ones you see now (food, water, cold, I have to shit shit meters and markers), where raptor packs would hunt you down and make you sweat a bit, and swarm you fast like xenomporphs in AVP 1 and 2. Something to really challenge the player while keeping it immersive in the jungle or some overgrown village/town areas like in Trespasser. Something to test the player's reaction times, ability to think ahead, and so on.

Some get lucky and are kept to be breeders, others get euthanized before being fed at the very least. I think the worst would be being a feeder mouse and sent to a snake. A lot of exotic snake owners favor constrictors which can be long drawn out deaths.

Turtles usually drown the mouse or rip them apart, frogs eat them whole, so do a lot of lizards and reptiles.

One of the easiest bosses in the game, actually. Fuck about on foot around it, pelt it with your gun, shoot barrels. Becomes a turret section for a bit, then you're back on foot. The fight can end itself without you shooting during the first and third part of it because there is an NPC shooting at it in a helicopter that's doing the bulk of the real damage to get him stunned for the QTE beat downs.

untrue. There is a correlation but you would be troubled to prove causation. Modern humans most direct relatives were specialized species of monkeys that lived in the dense jungle. We were just a late developing species, but humans ancestors filled a niche roll in hard to live enviroments. After developing a strong population in those enviroments and overpopulated humans became more generalist and exploded out raping and killing all the animals. Giant ant eaters in south america for example disappeared after humans arrived.

Do you not know when most mammal species evolved? The only mammals around when Dinosaurs were around themselves were small ground dewellers that survived the mass extinction event that took the dinosaurs and a lot of other species, as tends to happen. There were plenty of species filling up dense jungle niches during the Dinosaur eras. Like those feathered early pre-bird ancestors gliding around.

The argument isn't that humans wouldn't have fucked up dinosaurs, it's that humans would never have existed if dinosaurs and the rest of the ecosystem of the end of the Cretaceous hadn't fucking collapsed and left a lot of niches for the common mammal ancestor to branch out and fill. Dinosaurs and humans will never meet without cloning or time travel, because the eventual evolution of humanity is predicated on the Dinosaurs going extinct.
