In Borderlands 1 it was an adjective used to denote elite enemies, a Psycho was a trash mob, but a Badass Psycho was a hulking tank. They were usually giant, deformed and had glowing blue eyes. It was a nice way of knowing that what you were facing was tough, the word wasn't used anywhere else.
Problem was after the first game the tone of the series changed drastically, and instead of being humorous in a cynical, dark way they went the method of being loud and shouty and "lol so randumb". Why does anybody care about the story in games that are almost exclusively played for online vs. matches?
A host of reasons, so I'll list the primary reason I personally never looked into it - "hero shooters" are an interesting idea, but the big worry for me is that the MOBA aspect of the genre will overtake the moment-to-moment fps action. Games like Overwatch and Lawbreakers which flirt with the "hero shooter" concept generally avoid this by only having a few specific MOBA-like aspects. OW is essentially Tf2 with a large roster+cooldown-based abilities replacing the weapon loadout system, and ultimate abilities on a charge. Lawbreakers looks to essentially be an arcade shooter with the same cooldowns and ultimates gimmick. Battleborn to my eye looks to borrow too much from other genres which breaks up the symmetric fps purity - your character choices are locked in, there's levelling, there are items, I'm pretty sure your ultimates are dependent on level as well.
While it's difficult to speak about Lawbreakers as it isn't out yet, Overwatch at the moment is a purely competitive multiplayer shooter - the gameplay is focused on winning against the other team, all non-cosmetic options are available to all players at all times, and as much as some characters are less-skill reliant than others (Winston being an obvious example), the game still rewards moment-to-moment skill, in terms of mechanical skill or game sense. It's a team game, and certain matchups are more rock-paper-scissors than others, but the game still essentially comes down to better players beating worse players, and better teams beating worse teams. Overwatch is in that sense a very simple, concisely designed game - it's a team based, class-based fps. Battleborn... I don't think even Gearbox exactly knows what Battleborn is. It tries to be a shooter, it tries to be a MOBA, it tries to be Borderlands, and it doesn't seem to do any of those well. Battleborn is, in all senses of the word, a mess.

This is entirely Gearbox's fault.
They made the game too colorful. WAY too colorful. Instead of choosing a palate, they threw everything at the easel and hoped the right colors would stick. It made for a disgusting screen, even without the overlays.
They had absolutely no marketing until the last few weeks of release, and even then, most of it was either silently releasing animated trailers or trying to fuck with the Overwatch twitter and getting blown out in front of thousands, if not tens of thousands. This would work if it was some token indie game trying to make a name for itself, but it's a multi-million dollar AAA release, fucking market it. You can't do Overwatch levels but you can at least try, buy some Youtube ads or some banners.
And the characters mostly look like shit. Everyone always complains about waifus but that's just what happens when you make visually interesting characters, people latch on to them. The only character people latched onto in Battleborn was the fucking bird.
And the worst part is, that could all be excused. If the game was good, then people would've talked it up everywhere, it would've gotten decent sales.
But the gameplay is TERRIBLE. It's basically just the MOBA format, but with First Person Shooting instead of isometric action or even Third Person. It's a total fuckup of pushing two of the most overused ideas in gaming together in an attempt to make something new, that only made the worst of both gametypes jam together. And it worked even worse in singleplayer.
Maybe if Gearbox was a competent developer they could've made something good. Made the leveling mechanics smaller, made more visually interesting characters, focus on refining their shooting mechanics, and tone down the amount of screen clutter.
But that will never happen, because Gearbox is a bad developer. Only ever made one good game, Borderlands 1.
The worst part is, this game will, in a year, only be remembered as "the Overwatch ripoff." Nothing more.

You can sell the concept multiple times if you lie about it and pass it off as something else, which is what they did with gone home in the first place, the game just appeared out of the ether one day, most websites announcing it and including a trailer for it about 4 weeks before it was set to come out, and the trailer explains nothing but sets up the idea that it's a spooky house in the middle of secluded nowhere, punctuated with the eerie music and light breaking sequence.

There is pretty much just always someone talking in the top right corner, and it gets so bad that we never hear a full dialouge because we just accept other quests while they're STILL FUCKING TALKING.
I remember a moment where that Dr. Tannis bitch was just talking for 5 minutes while we were fucking around, and by the end of it, when i could finally hear again, i was just like "oh, she just stopped talking"- It's just fucking background noise because there's so much of it. AND IT'S NOT FUNNY. AND IT PANDERS LIKE NOTHING ELSE. Literally every single character has some kind of quirk like "oh, she stutters, and is harrased by a filthy cis male (we thought his bantz were funny), but then she kills him and we're supposed to root for her or something, like it was cool that she killed a guy. They embezzled the budget for Colonial Marines to fund Borderlands 2, and then used the profits from Borderlands 2 to fund more Borderlands shit and eventually Battleborn. Battleborn might seriously be threatening the studio's welfare though.
