It's simple. Last gen, Nintendo made strong efforts to reach out to the female market. This gen, they've failed to retain most of that, just like with the casual market.
Similarly, old people in Japan are a huge market (because...surprise, Japan is an aging market) and if you think people here were bad with computers, you should see what Japan is like. PC usage STILL isn't very common over there, which is why the PC market is absolutely dead outside of business use.

There's an online version for free, Pokemon TGCO. I collected all the cards as a kid and only recently learned how to play a few months ago.
