From fucked up the first dark souls (at least, never bothered with the others), you basically need to mode the game to graphics settings, keyboard control settings, literally everything you'd expect in an actual game. The game doesn't even run at your native resolution without mods, it's stuck at 720p regardless of what you select in the menu.

There's a mod called dsfix. Drag and drop it's contents into the same folder as the dark souls executable.
Optionally you can mess with the dsfix.ini (I think it's called). You can enable "toggle fps" there or some shit, and it'll allow you to play at 60fps by pressing the backspace key. .

Yeah from really fucked it up. Not sure what they were thinking. I believe they were really hell bent on getting PC the "console experience" even if that meant limiting the resolution to the 720p that the consoles played at. Funny enough, the mod to allow you play at other resolutions (DSFix, which also includes a lot of other fixes like custom keyboard controls and shit) was actually being made before the game even got released, and within 15 minutes after the game being released you could download it. Why from didn't unfuck the game when they realized people were going to mod it anyway I don't know.
