My favorite pastime next to video games was staring into that catalog absorbing every single detail day after day after day for several years, knowing I'll never own any of the sets featured. Every year I'd keep annoying the local toy shop clerk if they would give me the new free catalog. I used to do that until like 99 when they started charging for catalogs, because other kids started doing it as well.

Well my problem was not money but my parents giving me the excuse that consoles fucked TVs (fat ass television we had) and that I would get too hooked and stuff. On the other hand my cousin always had something cool in hand (given by my aunt) N64, gameboy color, PSX, etc and I'd always played on them when I could, I even asked him to bring the N64 to my house on the days he would visit.
But it was not all lost for me, since long ago my dad got this computer (a spacial station for those years) and it had installed some dope Win 95 16bit games wich I played a lot, maybe thats why nowadays Im more of a PC gamer, but yeah thats my story.

Most of it was probably lies and or imagined.
My mom always hated Christmas because to her it meant a lot of panic trying to meet the kids' expectations. She had to work really hard and often night shifts to make ends meet. My oldest siblings were basically taking care of me and getting me up to school and shit while she was gone. We never really had any spectacular Christmases, but they were never really bad either. Mostly basic gifts, but we had learned not to be greedy.
She often got depressed around winter and the stress eventually caught up to her in 2003. Things weren't going well at work and she had to take breaks to cry in the bathroom several times. Apparently they really pitied her because they gave her four months worth of salaries when they finally laid her off. Instead of saving the money, she spent most of it on a way to make up for the shitty Christmases we had had before. She apparently felt the need to do so.
She got everything. A huge amount of food, a Christmas tree, decorations and plenty of gifts for all three of us. I got a brand new GBA SP. I didn't really understand how she suddenly was able to afford it, but It was pretty much a dream come true. Looking back on it, it's just sad and I feel so goddamn guilty for being so happy that day.

I stole a GameBoy with Pokemon Red from a classmate in 2nd grade. We all had our jackets and backpacks in a separate room, and we were not allowed to have any vidya in the actual classroom. So, I just walked in there during recess and took it. Put it in my backpack.
At the end of the day, when he realised it was gone, he was crying like crazy and the teacher had to ask around the class if anyone knew where it was. I obviously said nothing. I don't think I've ever seen a more devastated child.
I kept it at home until I beat the game, then I hid it in my drawer. My parents didn't know about it. I never gave it back. I still have it lying around, but I don't think it works. I was a little shit as a kid.

Oldfag here. I grew up fairly poor, usually was one console generation behind and only ever had used games.
When I was in high school, my second year the PS1 had already been out for a full year and I asked my Mom for one for christmas. She explained that money was pretty tight and that would have to be my only gift. My dad and I weren't on speaking terms (his new wife hated me) and I knew that the PS1 would be my only present. I agreed.
She got me one, and managed to scrape enough to get me a copy of Final Doom for it as well. It was awesome. The following weekend I returned a bunch of recycleables and used the money to rent Tomb Raider (the original one).
My Mom was watching me play it and she got hooked due to the puzzles. We played through the whole game together. She doesn't have the hand-eye to play, but loves the stories and puzzles.
To this day whenever a game comes out that I think might interest her, we get together and play through it. She's a big fan of the adventure games like Tomb Raider (she didn't like the reboot, she liked the old Lara), Uncharted, stuff like that. I've also introduced her to some other stuff like Valkyria Chronicles and other heavily story oriented games.
Being able to share a hobby with a parent is a really awesome thing.

Ask around and find out where your local orphanage is. Many of those kids don't have anything to call their own, and a used gameboy with a couple cartridges would go a long ways to making a kid happy. Make sure to get an AC adapter for them though, batteries are expensive.

I did something a little similar. Anyone remember when then announced the Legendary Edition for Halo Reach? The one that came with the cool statue of the spartans done by McFarlane?
Well, they had a lot of advertising for it in Gamestop at the time. I came in after work to pick up a new rechargable battery for my 360 controller and this kid, had to be maybe 12-13 was at the counter with his Mom. I overheard them chatting with the manager (who was a friend of mine outside of work) and the kid was telling him about how he had basically spent a few months mowing lawns and doing odd-jobs for neighbors to save up for his used 360 and how Reach was going to be his first game he ever pre-ordered. The kids mom was still wearing a waitress uniform (I think it was Denny's) so it was clear money was an issue. He looks at the ads for the Legendary edition and asks how much it cost (I don't remember, it was something nuts like $150-200 at the time) and you can tell the kid is kind of crushed he won't be able to scrape enough in time. So he pre-orders the normal version.
He and his Mom leave, go out to their car (old beat up Honda civic) and go on their way.
At this point, I had just gotten promoted to IT Manager where I was working, and had also gotten a performance bonus due to saving the company a ton of money by renegotiating our cellular service contracts.
So I ask my buddy if he would let me upgrade the kids pre-order on the condition of not telling them who did it. Paid out of pocket, and just didn't by any booze or cigars that month.

Dad went on a downward slope and after a divorce we all gave her shit about putting us through all that but we weren't really as aware about what a fuck up our dad was and the fact that she was trying to raise three children by herself basically. Now she's got a nursing degree making more money than I could ever see myself making, and a guy who treats her right. I've apologized for all the shit I put her through more times then I can count. I'm so fucking proud of her.
I have nothing interesting to say, my life has never been interesting. Did not had many friends in school until the last semester of grade 12, when I met fellow weeabos.
