I think that a lot of starting artists miss the objective, and this leads to confusion. When I was in high school I took a class on English rhetoric, only it wasn't called that, and the teacher never made it crystal-clear that the purpose of the class was rhetorical analysis. It didn't occur to me that the class was about articulating and understanding arguments until halfway through the year, but when I finally understood the purpose, the class became extremely easy. That is why I think this explanation may help.
The purpose of basic art is to take a 3D subject and place it on a 2D plane. You are articulating a shape with form that visually behaves like something with shape and form, but is only present on paper. This is why still-life studies are so helpful; they drill into your mind the essence of "projecting" three dimensions onto two.
