I love my Vita to pieces but if I weren't so into niche Japanese titles then the system would have very little content for me that I couldn't find better elsewhere. I can list off what games I enjoy on the system and what I'm looking forward to and they'd glance over them as low quality weeb trash. Just as well, because I don't give many big-name western games a second glance, and I'm sure I'd enjoy at least a few if I just gave them a chance.

I was a late PSP owner, I had bought a DS first and was happy I did since I wasn't jaded about graphics while I was exploring some of those titles.
After getting a PSP there was lots of great games to catch up on, but overrall the library was kinda small, still no regrets because it introduced me to Patapon.
Vita I've been cautiously avoiding due to all the talk of how badly its doing and that developers or sony weren't making games for it. That effectively says to me that they're just killing their own console or planning to release another one.
I was mad jelly about games like Gravity rush, but that's on PS4 now so I still don't have a strong incentive to buy one. I feel bad for it.

PSPs are very cheap. It wouldn't take a big hit out of your wallet to get a PSP. You can pirate them all and use a cheap memory card (micro SD in adaptor) to have a shitton of PS1 and PSP games.
Vita still has the same support, but unless you hack it (dependent on firmware version) you can't pirate PSP or PS1 games and are otherwise reliant on the online store. Also have to use proprietary memory cards which get pretty pricy. It's a nicer feeling device in general, the d-pad is incredible and the better analogs make a difference in plenty of games.

I never played the Ys exclusive to the vita, played one of the ones on pc and i can't particularly say that they stand out very much. There's a lot of running around and just bumping shit. I'm sure it was nice on the psp but I can't say that it holds up.

As someone who owns and likes both 3DS and Vita, the Vita version of Virtue's Last Reward was superior to the 3DS version (whether it's a weeb game or not, is something I'm not getting into), due to not have a glitch/bug that deletes your save file.
