It wasn't even a bad game in most respects. Their true failure comes from their thought that Bordomelands success would somehow sell their game for them with 0 advertising in the same month that a similar looking game with millions in advertising would compete.
This same exact thing happened with PVZ 2 just last month. Most people didn't even know the game released and it was actually praised by many reviewers and youtubers but it had 0 advertising and is already fucking dead despite not being a bad game in the least. There are too many free games now days and unfortunately marketing hype is a lot more profitable than making a good game.

Gunplay is bad, melee is worst. Grind to unlock everything character and items which do actually change the game. Terrible single player that lasts too long. Terrible art design and the game is just ugly. Dialogue is painfully bad but you should expect that from a gearbox game.

I feel patronised by Overwatch, it thinks I'm stupid. It believes I want a fictional 'waifu,' and that I'm actually going to be racist, sexist, and generally just a horrible and not particularly intelligent person. But that's not me. I am intelligent. I don't even like to think of myself as of above average intelligence, but I am at least that. So I can't abide by Overwatch's brain rot. I really can't. I'm not stupid enough for it.
Battleborn treats me with respect. It has brilliantly intelligent jokes (The Algorithm is one, long skit in and of itself, and perhaps hands-down the best satire of the Simulated Reality theory I have ever seen), nifty humour, great dialogue, as well as a diverse, charismatic, and sometimes quite deep cast of characters.
It's brilliant, and there's so many moments where it's caught me off guard. Such as ISIC yelling my name in the middle of The Algorithm. Which resulted very much in 'oh, eff you, ISIC' as I'm easily startled. It was great, though. That's a brilliant joke to pull if you can get it right.
Ultimately, Battleborn is clever, and Gearbox thinks I'm clever enough to appreciate their clever. Thanks Gearbox!
Now, I could either have a game that's so diverse, characterful, charismatic, and has more of an identity and a personality than so many others from this year or however many prior... Or instead I could play Street Fighter II with guns and far less diversity. I feel that Battleborn is as intelligent and respectful as Overwatch is air-headed and patronising.
