I've been trying to beat Shadow the Edgehog recently and my God is this game a chore. Like it's not awful, but it's certainly a really stupid game. Disregarding all the edge, it's mechanically inept and so many things would make it better, such as a lock on feature, or the ability to carry more guns. It's like they included the strafe feature just to piss people off.

It's funny, I was just recently thinking about how much I like Sonic in general after reading up on THHPII and how a big part of the lore is shitting on Sonic through an in-universe parody. Figured I'd go give Lost World a go since I never gave it a chance when it came out.I hate it, the physics are more fucked up than Sonic 4 and the homing attack is the least consistent it has ever been in a modern Sonic game. You know why I like Sonic? It's the only series I know that tries to do what it does. High-Speed Platforming. All other platformers are generally very slow, and that's the safest option to take. If the character is slow, then level design becomes easier due to smaller levels.
The Sonic series tries (and fails, many times) and I will always respect it for that.

This is something so many people underestimate. Sonics concept is cool because people like the idea of speed and going fast. Drag races are popular, racing games have always been popular, theres tons of car fanatics who are autistic about engines and speed capabilities. sonic represents this and more with his cast of characters, crazy worlds and surrealism, and poppy well made music that encompasses a variety of genres.
It is damn hard to make levels if they really want to show how fast sonic can possibly go. Unleashed is the closest most realistic depiction, and probably the last, well ever see of sonic going at these unreal speeds. So either what they do is make it in 2D, slow sonic down, add an alternate gameplay, or its just a short unsatisfying game.
Ultimately what sonic team needs, is to hire more people. They need to split up. Theyre fortunate to work with a series like sonic where every game can be different so its not as soulless as say, making a call of duty or sports game, but im sure even they get tired of having been stuck with sonic for years. What was the last non sonic game they made? Phantasy star portable and nights journey of dreams? Puyo doesnt count since those games are pretty much just rehashes
Why do people think that sonic CD is so much better than 3 & Knuckles. Call me a nostalgiafag because i never owned a sega CD but I didn't play sonic CD until a couple of years ago and it was... okay. I liked some aspects of it but the time warp thing didn't really do much besides change some routes and the aesthetic of the levels and the music was eh in comparison to sonic 2 and 3. Am i missing something or am I blinded by nostalgia to think that sonic 3&Knuckles is the best one of all?

Sonic 3k and SA1. I hate how people use the term aged to describe the criticism for this game I replay SA1 occasionally and it plays the same from when I was younger. The game was always a bit rough but if you spent a few playthroughs you'll be able to outplay most of the kinks and glitches. That's what kills me about the 3D games. They should be objectively better than the 2D games, but Sonic Team just can't seem to pull their heads from their asses and make it work. Plenty of fangames, in concept, prove it can be done. Fucking SRB2 even proves how well 3D Sonic can work, and it has functioning slopes now to boot. Sonic Team can't even do that much right without a scripted even or boost pad. It's disgustingly pathetic.
For some reason someone at Sega is content with mediocrity. Making a game that looks and sounds great, but only plays passably. The worst part is, I can see how every little thing could be improved. How these games come close to hitting the mark, but always end up short because they're all flash and no substance.

It speaks volumes that the two most ambitious 3D Sonic games were in that time period after Iizuka was director and before he was producer. Granted 06 was a massive disaster but Unleashed was incredible and just need more fast-paced Werehog gameplay to be legitimately great.
