Health point. In RPG's everything is expressed in numerical values, that also goes for health.
HP (health points) is basically a numerical value of how well your character is doing regarding health. Low healthpoints = beat to near death and blood everywhere. High HP = just woken fron a comfy nap and perfectly fed etc.

In DnD it makes sense, since you roll a dice to "hit" and then you roll another dice to deduce how much damage these "hits" do.
