How long do you think it's gonna take them to break even with sales? Cause let me tell you one thing, nobody's gonna pay a cent for the game at this point. Though if you milk the loyal ten people left still playing this for a couple grand a piece, and get another two or three guys playing cause they check it out once it's free and find themselves spending a bit on cash shop stuff too, that's probably the more profitable thing.
Anyway, not that we have concrete numbers but based on the statement that BB cost more than Borderlands 1 & 2 combined (which means it's more than ~55 million bucks, advertising not included) and that according to an recent statement BB sold just a slightly better than Borderlands 1, which got ~2m copies in the first months... and that a game can easily need a million in sales for every 5m of development budget (I remember that one gaminginsiders article where it says it can go up to 1m sales / 10m budget), basically, even with generous estimations, the chances that this ever turns out a profit are nil.
Sooo might as well experiment, eh. I can see this go f2p. Wouldn't play it either way but I can imagine it.

I had no problems with the PvP gameplay honestly. It's pretty fun, especially when you get an actually coordinated team.
PvE is boring as hell though, and you have to slog through it to unlock most of the characters.

Gameplay-wise, it does some good stuff, and does some bad stuff. I like the moba-gameplay myself, because all of the characters feel unique, and you can get some creative builds going. I really hate your usual ASSFAGOTS, but I like some of the elements. (Hence why I fell in love with Awesomenauts.) I like some of the emphasis on melee characters (even though they can clear a path no problem.)
What I DISLIKE as of late is a lack of balance, and how easy it is to get a shitty team that has no idea what they are doing vs a team of level 100's since the matchmaking is so dead. As I pointed out earlier, melee characters can wipe the floor after a certain point. Same with characters like caldarius which can just ground pound your ass. There's also a few useless characters, and a few characters that are way too bullet spongey for what they are. (Ninja shroom is way tough to kill for a healer.)
As I said, there's a good game underneath the gearbox trash, but gearbox can't market and gearbox can't really do anything right. So it will fade away.

I might be late to the thread but I pre-ordered it and split the cost with my brother since you can share ps4 games and we played it for the first month, something like 130 hours. I didn't care much for the story as it's entirely escort or wave style defense missions but the pvp was good.
Too bad the players were pretty shit, I figured with paragon and smite already on the console people would understand what a moba is. It had awful matchmaking so my winrate ended up being 80% or so, it was fun while it lasted, about a month. I don't see myself playing Overwatch much longer than a month either to be fair. What really killed the game was a lack of patches or even any information from devs, one of the developers promised some skins and other content within two weeks of launch, he later apologized and said marketing was in control of their release and lo and behold they made the skins cost real money.
It is a good game, that suffered from poor marketing decisions and a bad release window. The criticisms on /v/ are mostly parroted nonsense, the game has real flaws but people here are a little too desperate to hate on something they haven't played.
