Joking aside, he's just my favorite design. I actually like the LttP and Oracle art right after him. I feel WW and TP pushed too far in either direction where OoT struck a nice manga-esque balance. Even though he was in my favorite Zelda, I can't bring myself to care that much about the hero of time, the silent protagonist thing just makes most Links feel so lifeless and dull and I don't really like projecting personalities onto blank slates. That's some intense and foreboding atmosphere. Brings me straight back to the days of OoT and MM's dungeons and just how drenched they were in ambience, character and that subtle sense of wrongness. I mean. some games are definitely connected. Zelda 2 is a direct sequel to Zelda 1. Link's Awakening is clearly a sequel to Link to the Past. Majora's Mask is a very direct sequel to Ocarina of Time and Phantom Hourglass obviously takes place right after Wind Waker.
I think those are the only games that feature the same Link, but then certain Zelda games have story/world connections to other Zeldas. For example, Skyward Sword was made with it being a prequel to the whole series in mind. Twilight Princess was also made with the idea that it takes place a long long time after Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask too). And Wind Waker obviously takes place in a flooded Hyrule, with Spirit Tracks taking place in a new continent, the same one discovered at the end of Phantom Hourglass.
So though it's true not ALL Zelda games are supposed to be connected, (Like for example there's next to no connections between Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and LttP, thus why they made three separate timelines). I think it's obvious certain Zelda games where made with connections to others in mind. Some even being direct sequels to others. But yeah, obviously not much of this timeline shit was planned in advance.

I definitely remember the feeling of foreboding from OoT and MM and I really miss it but I didn't get it from the demo at all, it seemed like a regular sci-fi premise, am I missing something? I think the days of getting genuinely spooked by Zelda games are over although I'd love to be proven wrong, but nothing we've seen so far seems especially dark. Even when TP got dark it never felt quite as eerie as the older titles, I think their standards about what's acceptable for the young audience changed over time.
