The forgotten Mega Man

Thread replies: 520

So /v/, why is Battle Network so forgotten?

The original series is fondly remembered to the point that people gave $4,000,000 for a spiritual successor. The X series is also heralded as classic, praised endlessly by fans and critics alike. Even Legends, despite not having aged as gracefully (admit it, its controls are pretty clunky even by three-years-after-its release standards, and the 2D Mega Man games before it are far easier to pick up and play for the first time), almost got a new 8th gen installment with an absolutely massive fan outcry when it (and its kickstarter spiritual successor) got canned.

But despite being a commercial success, nobody outside of /v/ remembers Battle Network. You don't have any "critics" like Egoraptor or Bunnyhop make videos about it. You don't see it pop up on "top GBA games" lists like you see X or Legends for their systems, and definitely not for a lack of quality. You don't see anyone remark about how fucking fantastic and original its incredibly fun battle system was.

I'd love to see this series get acknowledged by anyone but it seems like it might only be remembered for being just another Mega Man spinoff series.
>>
>random encounters out the ass
It's shit.
>>
Battle Network Roll is best Roll, prove me wrong faggots, you cant.
>>
>>342249735
Bullsiht. The encounter rate was pretty lenient. On top of that there's an item like Repel from BN2 onwards which stops random encounters entirely for a while.

But I agree
>>
also i think the problem is the story. the story was pretty shit in all of them to begin with but the main problem is how old lan is. each game made him one year older. i'm pretty sure he was 9-10 in mmbn1 and 14-15 in mmbn6. they just couldn't keep going on with it like that. if anything we could hope for a spinoff or sequel with his son patch. mega man stays since hes a program. also as far as i know mmbn series is the only one with a definite ending. all other series are left somewhat open?
>>
>>342249641
It was my favorite series on the gba next to pokemon. I'd love to see a new entry to the series. I tried starforce and it was unbearable
>>
>>342251405
That's completely wrong.

BN1 starts with him being 11 years old in Grade 5.
BN2 takes place over Grade 5's summer break.
BN3 takes place at the end of Grade 5, with him graduating at the end and also has his birthday.
Then BN4, 5 and 6 takes place when he's in Grade 6, and again at the end of BN6 he graduates to middle school.

Battle Network is forgotten because 4 sank the series worse than any iceberg ever could.

Its forgotten because it was the only MegaMan series to end and stay finished.

There's nothing really left to milk out if the series aside from HD remakes.
>>
Oh I absolutely love the series but it's really no surprise the other Megamans would be better known. My only guess is it hasn't had enough time to build up nostalgia in people and purists are going to hate it anyway just like they hate Legends.

>>
>>342253365
Worse than normal plot, bad scenarios, lack of actual dungeons, makes you go through the same net areas over and over and over, random scenario shuffling, you need to play through it three times to get all the 'content', dark chip system is meh, Souls are unbalanced, shit translation, people who met Lan last game forget that he exists, the list goes on.

Never doubt Capcom's ability to milk. Well probably just get a new character if (never) they decide to bring it back.

>paying attention to the story of an 11 year old boy
there was absolutely nothing i could relate to about lan. the stories were shit. www was shit. gospel was shit. nebula was shit. the only redeeming factors for the series are the god tier music, gameplay and character designs. if youre playing any mega man game for the story then you are simply autistic.

Personally, the music somehow is worse. And you kinda have to restart the game from the start to get the post game content.

Other than that is okay. Hell you can finally battle Roll, green Navis, and purple evil looking Navis.
>>

>>
>>342253741
>gospel was shit
>implying

Kidnapping, bombings, killing their failed operatives, genociding a country, the largest scale attack on SciLab in the series, organizing all the top Netbattlers in one meeting in an attempt to kill them in a castle full of death traps, crashing a plane...

Gospel was by far the most threatening organization and every scenario of BN2 was fun as fuck thanks in part to them.

>>
>>342255894

>>
>>342249641
These games were the shit, except for 4 which was boring. I don't think there is much to talk about. I think the one notable thing about it is that it's the one series that actually god trading card battle system in an ARPG right. I credit this to the battle grid allowing for cards to attack different angles and ways, rather than card systems where they'd just be attacks with different effects on a regular field.

I also remember the online fandom being pretty bad. My girlfriend was way too into the series at the time the games were coming out. I played all 6 games, but never really cared about any of those forums. She was a mod on one and I remember the two rockman.exe forums were pretty bitter towards each other even though they were the same fucking nerds on both boards.
>>
>>342253597
Your loss, memester. Star Force 3 was frankly the best game and surpassed BN3/6.

BN has a dedicated fanbase that has dwindled out since there was no games. It's not as iconic as the original, yeah, but no Mega Man spinoffs are, not even X.

And even then it's just people fellating Mega Man 2.
So who gives a shit what public thinks? The franchise is dead anyway. WE remember. That's all that's important.
>>
Story:
3 > 2 >= 6 > 5 > 1 > 4

Overall
3 >= 6 > 2 >= 5 > 1 (replaying, when you remeber net) > 4 >> 1 (when you dont know/remember net)

I liked them all though. Even 4 with dark chips, 3 tournaments for story and really annoying and boring parts.

It's not about how much it was advertised or what merchandise and other material it had.

It's about it being remembered as a great game in its own right.

Skylanders has tons of merchandise and tie-ins but it'll never be remembered as anything more than a mediocre video game series no matter how much money it makes.

I liked them as a preteen, but the characters and story are definitely suited to their target audience. It's kinda hard to feel invested in this particular series as an adult when it's about a schoolboy and his toy robot program (that's his dead brother or something? I don't remember the weird plot that well).

I wouldn't say it didn't age well, but that its audience leaves it behind.

Loved this series. 6 is probably my favourite and a nice finish to it. The Cross and Beast systems make the battles interesting. I'm also probably one of the few that enjoyed the liberation missions in 5. Also think while still good, 3 is massively overrated.

Also the Starforce games aren't that bad. Well, 2 is shit but 3 is good.

BN is the far better series than Edgy Mega Man X due to being more novel, having significantly deeper gameplay with far more customization and replay value.

The lack of character knowledge was something that was hit or miss with throughout the whole series.
I think you're referring to Mr. Match, and that was one of the few characters they actually kept interaction up with throughout all of the games.

People seem to keep misinterpreting the OP.

It's not forgotten as in 'it needs another game', though that would be nice.

It's not forgotten in the sense that it didn't sell well for its time.

It's forgotten because it's generally remembered as a fad Mega Man for kids with an anime, and that it's not remembered for simply being a great series with great gameplay.
Look at the number of critical analysis or series retrospectives you can find online on Mega Man, X or Legends, but absolutely NONE for Battle Network.

Starforce 1 was an interesting new take but again its the start of something new, they had to build on it

SF3 though was when they fucking perfected it, it's honestly as good as BN3/2/6

The character development is great too (read:there's actually character development this time around) and the story is cool alium space shit with megaman basically being a power ranger that HENSHIN A GO GO's to fuse with an alium to become a futuristic version of a netnavi

It's really a shame, because aside from the Lego and Touhou knockoffs, BN has an absolutely incredible, complex, and unique battle system that became completely codified and fluid by BN3.

I remember a long time ago seeing a commercial for one of the BN games. However, I think it was BN4. I use to try and get people into the games a long time ago and I still have some friends who emulate it on their phones, but sadly trying to find someone who has the cartridges so we could netbattle seemed impossible.

ChronoX's MEME system or whatever the fuck effectively has a freeze soul that looks pretty neat.
Though their Flashman form looks better.

I just can't get past a lot of ChronoX's shit. The mugshots are inconsistent, the music is gratey at times, the battlefield looks awful to me, and they changed the activation timing on a lot of the chips. If you've played enough BN, you know the exact delay from when you press A to when a Cannon actually shoots forward, making counters perfect. They changed the delay to pretty much nonexistent, and it fucks with me.
>>

1 was a good intro. It was new, different, but you gave it a chance because it was new. Also Sonia Strumm/Harp Note. Holy shit, muh dick.

2 was the worst in the trilogy by far. Introduced 2edgy4me antagonist, and a generally unfun plot. Phantom was based though.

3 is easily the best. Can Wave Change where ever you want, graphics look better for some reason even though that doesn't make sense. Edgy antag is cool now. Character development. Rescuing Kelvin.

3 was the perfection of Star Force.

Actually, there is a TON of shit they could do to make the game feel fresh again. But I fear all of those ideas are too ambitious for them, so they never did it.
-Allowing other players to enter your game.
-invading other people's game as a virus.
-Customizable webspace and map builder.
-Connecting to real wifi hotspots will create a procedurally generated level depending on the address.
-Holding real battle events through the game itself, so everyone can spectate and join.

I've been thinking about it a lot recently, especially after the announcement of the new Mega Man cartoon, and how if BN launched today it would be used as an example of how fucking shit Capcom is.

I mean, BN has all the elements of a bad reboot. Redesigning the main character, giving him a kid sidekick (or making him a sidekick TO a kid), fundamentally changing the core gameplay and story to something wildly different.

Of course, when Battle Network came out, Classic, X, and Legends were all alive and well, and Zero was was on the way.

The GBA had a 5-to-6 years successful run, though, and it had a good library as well, even if it began with SNES ports.

Not only that, but it sold a lot, the little blasted thing.

But a lot of the complaints, even back then, was "It's not jump n shoot!".

A game magazine were I live, one of reviewers gave MMBN3 a 2/10 for not being the classic series without any further arguement.

People didn't like a a Pokemon/YGO flavored Megaman. And the GBA was the era handheld JRPGs needed to escape being clones of toyetic series.since something as flashy as Golden Sun existed (Yeah GS has no characterization but it felt like the game that led to more "normal" RPGs on the GBA.)

Never.

Operate Shooting Star was Masazaku Eguchi's (Mr. Famous') last-ditched effort to revive interest in the series. Capcom literally DID NOT give him a budget for it, a good chunk of it came out of his own wallet, hence it's horribly low production values.

It did more damage than help...

> I know the story matters little in these games

Story was like half the shit, not all of us cared about finding another kid who had the game to get into the competitive aspect of this shit.

Collecting chips, experiencing plot, completing everything, it was all part of it. Its like saying plot doesn't matter in Paper Mario series, but then when they tried taking it out along with taking out partners, suddenly people realized it was actually important.

2 is just a massive game with a lengthy in game
introduces styles, but theyre kind of uninteresting for the most part.

3 improves the style system by making them better all around(unless you go for shit like shadow like i did because i was an edgy kid not realizing i hated the gameplay style). Also adds customization in the form of bug navi.

4 i only remember it being boring and awful

didnt play 5

just started into 6 and it gets rid of styles, changes them to a variety of fun and powerful transformations, which can then be further transformed w/ ur cybeast transformation turning you into a god

the net is way better, the buster isn't broken as fuck anymore so now the chips are way more important, you can runaway from a battle without needing a chip, elemental transformations and lots of new shit
>>
>>342300673
The internet areas aren't shit for one. You also don't recover HP after each battle, so you have to get better, and you can also run without needing a chip to do so. There's also the * code that's introduced in BN2 that acts as a wild code so folders flow better, and there's also the reg system that lets you set a chip in your folder to always show up in your opening draw. There's also Styles in 2 and 3, Souls in 4 and 5, the Cross system in 6, the NaviCust which replaces power ups in 3 onward and folder building gets changed/balanced in 2, 3 and 6. There's also the emotion system in 4 onward that lets you counter enemies to let your next chip do double damage among some other things.

Bosses are also more mobile and aggresive compared to BN1, so there's a lot less StoneMan and NumberMan sitting in the back center panel launching an attack every 5 seconds.

And then there's the post game in each game that adds some more areas, bosses and chips to get as well as some other activities to do like the time trials in BN3 or the request boards.

Overall, the series starting at 2 feels a lot more polished than 1 did.
>>
>>342300673
Net got clear landmarks and got wider instead of looking same-y.

The *-code added new posibilities.

New chips, improved Program Advances, Styles, Souls and the Navi customizer.

Battle Network 5 even adds "Dungeon Maps" to the Network Dungeons.

The ability to play as different navis in 5 and 6.

"DarkSoul", a boss whose difficulty entirely depends on HOW you played the game, since it's a Dark MegaMan.

>>342301605
The webm of the ProtoMan fight demonstrates a small error in the programming, where forced movement applied to enemies causes them to be unable to enter invincibility frames,
That webm uses Going Road > Area Grab > Coming Road > Double Point to get the first two panels in a line to force-move into each-other, allowing shit like that.

Similar things can be done with MagCoil chips and IceStage together.
https://youtu.be/kqEX12wP630
https://youtu.be/yh1hsjtLin4

The webm you posted shows a manipulation of how DarkMega AI works, in that the player strictly only used DarkThunder until that point in the game, since DarkMega draws its moves from everything you've done in the game to that point. (or at least the top X% most used chips/PAs)
>>
>>342302297
DS version?
>>
2, 3, and 6 are generally considered great. After that is 5, which is divisive because of its gimmick. Finally there's 1, which is mechanically outdated and 4, which gets a lot of hate because you need to play through the game three times to 100% it.
>>
>>342302063
If you have to play a select few, I'd say play 2,3 and 6. 5 is debatable but still good compared to 4. 1 shows its age
>>
>>342302403
Mega Man Battle Network 5 originally came out on GBA as Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel versions.

After a year it got a DS port called Double Team DS (it was uploaded undubbed earlier in this thread alongside Star Force 3).

It added voice clips, remixed/re-arranged music, BassCross and SolCross if you owned the GBA versions and/or Boktai 2, maps to help you in the internet areas...

And it's both versions in a single DS cartridge.

>forced movement applied to enemies causes them to be unable to enter invincibility frames
While technically true (at least for BN6, I haven't tried others), Sensor's always active when the beam's out on each panel the beam is on. The forced movement just moves the enemy to a different panel that's also being affected by Sensor's attack. And since Sensor paralyzes and pierces invis, it'll just hit anyway. The same thing would happen in other games if you used similar lingering invis piercing/paralyzing attacks when something like wind or fan was affecting the opponent. You can also see this happen if TomahawkMan or another enemy with StatusGuard moves on multiple panels being affected by Sensor. They'll take damage on each panel they go on.

Another way to have fun with invis piercing is using KillerCross's charge shot on Gregar when it's doing that attack where it does two claw swipes and shoots its head at you. It takes damage on each panel the head travels because KillerCross's charge shot pierces invis. You can also see this happen if you use that charge shot on ChargeMan when he's in the center row and not in the middle of his starting area.

>>342303329

Red Sun because of Search Soul and Guts Soul.

>>342303479
The other Navi busters all have different or unique applications, and I argue that few of them are actually "weak".
Colonel's is a > shape centered on the closest enemy in the row, and does decent damage.
KnightMan's is an AoE with a real good base damage, and it does Breaking damage.
ShadowMan's is a Anti-Dmg on demand.
TomahawkMan's is okay, but it can deal damage twice in the middle since it passes through enemies.
NumberMan's is actually weak. It only does 10x the roll in damage, the roll has to land on an empty space, there's a travel time and a delay after the roll, and it can be destroyed before the actual damage.
ToadMan's is kinda like ShadowMan's, gives him temp invulnerable, just have to be a bit more careful than ShadowMan's since it pops him up in the enemy area.

ProtoMan's is pretty weak, a normal Wide Sword with decent damage, but no movement or other use.
MagnetMan's is good, tracks up to one turn and does good damage, but can be destroyed.
GyroMan's is pretty weak damage wise, but does 3 hits on each of the 3 panels in front of him.
NapalmMan's is just ok, provided you know you've got an opening where you're not gonna get hit.
SearchMan's is great, good damage, multi-hit, auto-targetting, and pierces Invis effects.
Meddy's has similar problems to NumberMan, too weak and slow.

SF1 was pretty terrible at the start. You had to deal with Geo having his emotional meltdowns and "Fuck everyone" moments for hours while you're clawing at the screen wanting him to cut it out. Once he befriends Sonia it really turns around though he's still insufferable at times, and then he gets closer to Luna & Friends it really picks up in how much you care for him and everyone in general. Then you meet dad and he becomes a great character along with Omega-Xis.

2 was awful though, it just really let you down with everyone and then you had to go through another Geo situation with Burai, but then 3 happened and everything was good again.

SF may have had a rocky start, and it was different than Battle Network, but it ended up being a fun game with really lovable characters, and 3 knocked everything out of the park.

>It was a huge step back from bn

Anon, we all think this. But if you were to speak about the story line and character development, I think the majority would prefer Geo to Lan. Geo had some fantastic character development which is surprising given the series it's in.

In terms of characters, Star Force is pretty much completely superior.

Mayl is boring, whereas BOTH of Star Force's main heroines are A++++.

Granted, Solo's fucking insufferable, but you can't win 'em all.

Solo managed to be even more flat than the original Bass.

The original Bass at least had the excuse of being a Robot.

The one good thing about Solo is the Rogue Noise is pretty good. And it actually looks good on Geo despite Rogue looking stupid as hell.

I thought it felt much more "arcade-y" or at least was more action oriented compared to Battle Network's focus more on planning ahead what with the over-the-sholder viewpoint and overall larger HP pools and chip damage numbers and not having to worry about chip codes, and to me, that didn't necessarily make it bad. Would I have liked more Battle Network? Sure, but I can still appreciate Star Force for what it is, especially Star Force 3, holy shit that game's good.
