Is it ever a smart idea? Even with honest attempts such as Wasteland 2, the results are never good.

What about Shovel Knight
This really doesn't even have anything to do with Kickstarter, it's all Inafune. The game would have sucked regardless even if it was funded by traditional means with a publisher. It's just a game that happened to be on kickstarter, meanwhile tons of Kickstarter games have happened been made and came out that are totally fine if not really good to great.

they arent done with the extra characters
Kickstarter games are only good when development has progressed a decent amount beforehand, and could probably ship without the cash if they really wanted to. FTL is a good example of this. Yooka Laylee is looking amazing and thats another game that could've launched without kickstarter.
>>342125695
Divinity: Original Sin
Shovel Knight
Wasteland 2 ( it is fun you stupid nigger )

Pillars of Eternity ( it's okay )

Games shaping up to be great:
Div OS 2

I did. I needed to look forward to something and a Megaman spiritual successor fit the bill well. Didn't know as much as I thought I did about the development of Megaman.
The concept art looked solid and so did their gameplay ideas.
Overall it will be an ok game, but a ton of wasted potential and hype.

Div OS: EE is one of best games made in the past 10 years (and maybe the only RPG game where higher difficulty=better AI) and Div: OS 2 should be a lot better. FTL is great, POE was a decent 6/10.
>>342127206
This man is your friend. He speaks the truth.
FTL should be the prime example of kickstarter games being good. That game is very well made.

A product making its money back before it can prove its worth is never a good idea.
Just give it a few more years when all the kickstards will be burned one too many times for the free market to kick in. I just fear that a new generation of stupid teenagers with too much access to daddy's money will get into the scene before that happens. Shitty posts like >>342127206 that point out the few minor anecdotal exceptions to the rule are only making things worse.
>>342128826
It already has become increasingly harder to get backed unless you worked for AAA
>>342128925
Do people think that it proves anything? Tim Schafer technically "worked for AAA".

>>342125695

> Pillars of Eternity
> Undertale
There are plenty of good games that have come out of Kickstarter.
>>342129076
It looks great, but we're still completely unable to gauge it since we have nothing besides trailers and screenshots to go by.
For all we know, it could also end up being a huge turd. Hopefully not, but it's possible.
>>342125695
It's like investing, except you don't make a cut if the product is succesful and instead get the satisfaction of helping to create something you want and maybe a free copy of the game and some other ueless shit.
Technically it's less intelligent than investing, because you don't have to like a product to invest in it because in the end you can get money.
So is it a smart idea? This depends soley on how much you want the game and whether or not the devs are competent enough to deliver a product that reaches all their claims. People proved conman was a conman long before this thing was funded, so people who contributed were fools who didn't do their research.
>>342129817

so I guess 2/3 aint bad, I always assumed Shenmue 3 wouldn't turn out too well anyway, but it will finally be over at least
There've been good crowdfunded games, it's just that the ones that tend to be by big budget studios are massively self-indulgent and bloated, resulting in shitty delayed releases.
Get shit like FTL, Darkest Dungeon amongst others that come out of nowhere and actually find a decent audience.
Say what you want about publishers but for big studio's it's been shown that publishing houses are sometimes a lesser evil and an effective way to actually get a project done in a timely manner.
>>342131583
There's bigger difference between "I want to make an %GENRE% like it's 1998 again but can't be assed to apply any effort like I did back then" and "Look at this full length winnable demo that merely lacks some polish and variety"

>>342126706

>>342131583
Getting to see a near finished product before pledging is not a realistic situation to expect from most Kickstarter projects.
>>342131924
Shenmue will get substantial publisher funding and will still likely be a massive disaster.
It goes down to the individual work and developer team. Plenty of great games came from the system:
>PoE
>Divinity: Original Sin
>Shovel Knight
>Darkest Dungeon
>Undertale
Hell, the last one was made by literally one dude. But the thing all those games had in common is that they SHOWED their assets, not fronted an idea like Mighty No.9 or Yooka. Darkest Dungeon demonstrated its mechanics and layouts before asking for money. Shovel Knight showed off gameplay and had a backing concept before asking for money. Undertale had an entire playable demo before asking for money.
Seeing a pattern? Don't throw cash at individuals/developer teams asking for funds before they can show you they're capable of doing something worthwhile with them.

Your anecdote on how you play games doesn't change the fact that crappy fanbases are more attracted to a certain few things that swells into the entire internet.
There are respectable fanbases out there. Megaman is one of them. Sure there's a tard out there but it's nowhere like Sonic's devoted following. Also Sonic's gameplay was always shit imo, so it doesn't surprise me a crappy game got its defense force all these years ago.
>>342134306
It depends on the opportunity cost of the game to make. Essentially, Kickstarter is supposed to be akin to paying the dev(s) ahead of time to work on their project.
It begins to differ on team size. When you consider the developers of Might No.9 make a sizeable developement team, it would logically explain the amount they asked for on Kickstarter. On the smaller end, you see dudes like Underyale,s creator asking for about 50k USD, to essentially cover himself for a year for the opportunity cost of making the game.
No matter how simple the game, this opportunity cost has to be considered. By that point, you just have to be smart enough to give money to the dudes who can demonstrate they'll use it well.

Two reasons: First is that time and aging is a bitch and the young man you were once isn't the same as the old man you are now. People change.
Second, this was a Kickstarter meaning the handling of money and time is now fully responsible by the devs themselves instead of their bosses. Having a set time schedule and funding is more helpful then some people think. Many artist don't actually understand how to balance time and money accordingly and thus waste more resources then actually effectively using them.

So is Plague Knight gonna be as cute as the Plague Doctor from Darkest Dungeon?I wish I could've found a better picture to ilustrate my point
Some video games that got crowdfunded I greatly enjoy. Freedom Planet and Undertale are some of my all-time favorite games ever, just as an example. Skullgirls is my favorite fighting game. And while a HUGE amount of content wound up not getting into the game that should've, I liked Hyper Light Drifter.
I think if you mean is actually funding these games a good idea, I'd say it depends on how much the creator has to show for it. Is there a demo? How much gameplay footage is there, if any? And other things like that. You need to know if the developers are trustworthy. Sometimes bad stuff still comes out of it, but other times that's not the case. I'm quite excited for the upcoming Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. It looks like the best Shantae game yet, for instance. Mighty Number 9 looks kind of trash.

Are you afraid to tell people in real life of your interests because you're afraid they won't like them? Do you pretend that you hate stuff that other people do?
I don't know where we fucking went so wrong as to make absolute fucking cowards like you -who parrot every shitpost they see- welcome on this board. You echo every criticism you notice on this website without any knowledge of its source content so you can feel like you fit in the /v/ "le epic pessimist mindset" because you're certainly not going to get the satisfaction of community and friendship out of real life, you worthless fucking nobody.
I hate you. I hate everything you represent in this day and age on this board in which shitposting hiveminds have replaced actual debate. I hate that you are incapable of forming your own opinion. I hate that genuinely good games now have a bad reputation on this site because of fucking morons like you.
I'll be waiting for your response, but considering that 3 people disagree with you now, I guess you would be "asking for trouble", you fucking prick.

They're made by teams of people. The key people for MM9-10 are all Capcom people like Hayato Tsuru.
I don't know who is working on Bloodstained. Hopefully Iga can put together an all star team of people from the handheld games since Konami fired everyone. But if it's just Ini-Creates people then don't expect much.
Never, ever, ever engane in any videogame transaction other than "Pay money, get videogame now".
You are just setting up yourself to be scamed otherwise.

You'll have to tell me what's pretentious about it, because I don't see it.
Granted, it may actually be because I'm too old and I remember actually pretentious games like, say Captain Blood. Which I even managed to like. Because pretentious has little to no relationship to good or bad.
I'm not even a fan of the game. Against, not a great game. But solid, interesting little b game that certainly seems to me like it deserves its niche following.

>>342125695
It's a terrible idea as a consumer but it's pure genius from the developers. Not only do they get paid regardless of the game's quality, they have a shitload of people already invested in the game who will perpetuate their viral marketing for free. And many of their investors are even willing to give them more than the price of the game. It's very unlikely that the game will be good, but it's highly likely that the game will be more profitable than it deserves to be.

I really detest crowdfunding as a video game production method. Looking at a crowdfunded game is like looking at a basic white small house that someone said they'll build for you. Then you walk into that house and everything is plain and bland. There's a buggy sink pipe and a few wall boards out of place. You can see the house piping and plaster through some of the creaks. The door can open and close, but someone didn't measure the gap properly, so now there's a one inch space between the top and bottom of the door. The bathtub is oddly too small. The glass seems to shake more than it should whenever a little wind blows.
But I guess it's a nice house. Until a rainstorm hits.

So, you haven't played Undertale and you haven't played Spec Ops: the Line, which you should because it's really good. Do you play any games?
SO:TL has a lot of moral choices in it, including a section where you believe you are firing at a bunch of enemies but it's then revealed to be your own troops. You basically accidentally slaughter an entire battalion of your compatriots, and that's just one example.
Why is it that no one ever cries about that "nu-male SJW" shit for including moral consequences but despise Undertale for the same thing? Could it be because there's nothing bad about games showing violent actions having consequences? Could it be you're just a coward who mindlessly regurgitates shit you read on /v/?

Wasn't that supposed to come out in March?
>>342135370
It's a suit of armor you autistic fuck.
i get the feeling that people here are too depressed to play games and usually just talk about the old ones they have played
they end up thinking the newer ones are shit because they dont feel the push or compellation to play the new ones
>>342127206
>there is probably dozens of other good games coming out of kickstarter I don't know about
ummm SHENMUE 3 BITCH.
ONLY BROKE KICKSTARTER RECORDS AND YOU DIDN'T MENTION IT GEEZ LOUISE HOW COULD U????????????????????
>>342129989
They showed some gameplay off at E3.
It's pretty much what you'd expect for classic Rare.

He's right you know.

But then that goes against the whole purpose of Kickstarter.

The normies are slowly starting to turn against Fallout and Bethesda. Watch the next game they release fail to reach the sales of previous games. Companies are very risk averse, and they will make Fallout 5 exactly like 3-4, and people will complain about rehashes.
this thread is now dead
>>342136971
u should probably get off /v/
literally your entire post is complaining about the entirety of /v/
I randomly came back after like 3 years of not coming here and it's still a shit hole, this post made me laugh though...good shit

I remember when you were considered "one of the, if not the only, good tripfags".
I suggest quitting tripcoding before you sunk even further.

Maybe if you like games that play themselves by mashing a single button

Hand of Fate is pretty good. The sequel mite b cool.
And, let's not forget:Undertale.
Torrent where?
>this kickstarter is bad
>SO THEY ALL ARE
Same shit as tortanic. MN9 is the tortanic of kickstarter games and all future kickstarter games will be "THE NEXT MN9" as neckbeards desperately search for the next high from the next big failure

Hand of Fate is pretty solid. My saves got fucked up though so I had to start over, but I'm enjoying it a second time through which is something I don't say very often these days.Still think it would be a sort of cool party game with a couple other bros just drinking and deciding choices by committee, after the LAN dies down.

The draw backs of crowd funding. People will give a lot, and feel a personal connection to the project. They will follow every little thing you do. And if it doesn't live up to the expectations then they will hate you.

Yeah but conversations are collaborations. If I'm interested in posting my opinion about a certain game that the board won't tolerate I won't get anywhere.
>I hate that you are incapable of forming your own opinion.
My opinion coincides with others. What you're calling shitposting is what happens when retards like you disregard something you don't like without any thought behind it. You're not interested in debate, only hearing what you want to hear.

The E3 demo looked pretty good actually, so Iga must be actually guiding them.
I am left with a sense of loss. All this does is put the final nail on the Megaman franchise. Megaman legends 3 was never done because as Capcom said, people were not interested in it, at least not substantially enough. Megaman games have become a tired franchise, and no longer sell.
I will miss Megaman.

the trailer looks ok, let's hope it actually does something with the time mechanics, unlike the Castlevanias where it's useless against half the enemies.
I expect at least Braid and Chrono Trigger time travel mechanics, but fuck that "record your actions once and then jump on top of your old self to progress" shit, that's way overdone.

Shantae was the only Kickstarter project I ever backed.
If that campaign took place several months later, I would probably not back it, though. At this point I had virtually no trust in crowdfunding anymore.
The preorder culture is cancer. Crowdfunding and Early Access take it to the next level.

Good raging post.
I don't even like Undertale.

I think it's funny people act like you get attacked for liking undertale when it's the exact opposite here.
>>342125695
That looks like it's probably hyperbolic.
I feel like reviewers made their minds up about the 'score' for this game before it even came out. 'Backed it and don't like it' is not a valid criticism.
I thought Hulk Hogan put an end to shitty journalism...

Same anon. I started with Mega Man when it was released and played pretty much every single one since then except for a couple of the megaman Zero games. This is a sad day for me. I only hope bloodstained doesnt suffer the same fate.
>>342136971
This made me laugh really hard
>>342158401
Nice meme, but none. I don't buy into pre-purchasing and I don't rate a game lower because I did and don't like it. Maybe I could get into game reviewing on the grounds I'm not a shit head?
>>342136971
o shit
>>342158973
You can bitch about game journalism all you want, goober, but nearly every review site has scores of 65-75 for this game
It's mediocre and not a four million dollar game
Stay delusional though, Jewafune needs as many shekels as he can
Undertale was one of the best games of 2015, Yooka Laylee and Bloodstained look like they'll be decent. So crowdfunding works, but only when they're not being run by con artists.
>inb4 the /v-pol/ hugbox gets triggered by undertale
>>342159231
THANK YOU CON MAN!
It's good whenever there's already a prototype of the game and the devs have some experience, otherwise, you're just banking on a concept.
The only exception to that rule is Pillars of Eternity, but that's because it's Obsidian. A developer who still exists and makes games, rather than a rag tag of developers who used to make games, and only have an idea for a game.
Basically, crowd funding campaigns like Indivisible, Yooka Laylee, and Kingdom Come should be the gold standard.
>>342159231
Thank you Con Men!
I backed Asylum (by the guy who made Scratches).
That was several years ago, now. The game still isn't released.
Every once in a while the lead dev sends a tl;dr autistically rambling email which he refers to as an "update". I can't remember the last time any of them contained any actual information other than "we're still working on it, I swear"
Anyone else here backed that?
>>342159231
THANK YOU CON MAN
>>342160160
Replace IGA with Mr. Shitface, and you'll have a good image.
Even though we don't know how Bloodstained will turn out at this point, I have way more faith in IGA than Inafune.
For one, IGA is actually a game developer and not a businessman.
>>342138456
>They make me embarrassed to be a gamer.
>>342160350
>Mr. Shitface

>>342160350
Like it or not, Iga is now a business man too. Who do you think owns the rights to Bloodstained? If this thing takes off, he can be quite rich.
