Urbz on the DS was really good and so was The Sims 2. I think the portable ones stopped being fun when they lost their wee story and started to be like the mainline series

More options for elder sims - even shipping them out to a nursing home would be fine. They just take up space and feel like lesser sims.
Slower job progression.
Let sims earn less money. After one generation money ceases to matter. That's a big part of the game that suddenly isn't important anymore.
Have some benefits for 2.+ generations of sims. Perhaps you get a leg up in the political jobs if one of your parents was mayor. Perhaps you gain special traits. A family recipe that only your family can use. A reputation among the npcs based on what your parents did. Something that leaves a bit of a legacy and makes earlier sim's actions matter in later generations.

Spent 2 days creating an entire town of really hot girls of all races, gave them all Romance aspirations, then played the game as myself as the new guy who just moved into town. So many faps. I've played every single Sims game, on all consoles except for Wii, so i think i'm qualified on this subject.
Sims 1 doesn't hold up well today but is worth sinking an afternoon into every six months. The low points in all the other Sims games (filling motive bars, looping animation to fill up fun need etc) is the core gameplay, and it's just not fun.
Sims 2 is an absolutely great play, but it's starting to severely show it's age. I still play it from time to time. I'd argue that overall, it's the closest to 'perfect' a sims game has gotten.
Sims 3 is tricky. There's a lot of.. Bloat. This is probably a horrible comparison, but it's like what GTA IV did to it's series- introduced a new graphics style, is slow and heavy, but also ushered in a new era for the franchise.
If you start it with all expansions you're going to be flooded with all sorts of shit. Don't feel like going into the future? Well too bad! You own the future DLC so we're going to just teleport this big fucking time machine in your front yard ten minutes into the game.
Sims 4 is pretty awful so far. I last tried it when 'get to work' released, and there's just nothing there to do. Townies are randomly generated and all look terrible. It's easily got the best Sim creation in the series, though. If you could plop the sims 4 CAS into 3 and optimize the fuck out of it you'd be set for life.
I only remember Urbz on console being mediocre shit about rap music and skating. The GBA and DS versions are EXCELLENT, however- one of my favorites still today. Sims 2 handheld version was good. Bustin out for handhelds is just a watered down version of Urbz since it's the predecessor, but it's still a good game.

I remember discovering that Sims in uni dorms in TS2: University never ran out. Like, if one dies, another takes its place. So then I turned on cheats and started burning every single Sim that came in. To commemorate their burning, my Sim made a painting of their last moments, with that easel you can make snapshot-paintings with. By the end of that Sim's uni year, she's amassed like, a corridor of paintings, all of Sims burning to death. That was a pretty "crawling" moment for me.

Sims 3 hit the peak for the series. You might argue that 1 or 2 were better, had better music, or whatever reasoning you want to use, there's just no topping 3.
They added so much stuff, towards the end of their expansion creation they had to rehash ideas.
What they should've done is focused on optimization and changes to the game. From a business standpoint, however, this is clearly a terrible idea. Game-wise? If it had Sims 4's CAS and didn't run like shit i would say with a straight face it'd be one of the best video games ever.
It's really sad to see them rehashing expansions for 4 all over again. Everything they've been adding short of literal gender fluid options (no i'm not joking- google it) has been already in a previous Sims game. It's going to suck watching them pump out expansions like Seasons and Pets that have already been done and near perfected before.
Outside of the new graphics/CAS, there's just no point in 4 at all.

Success of games like The Sims is partly why i think emergent storytelling is the future of games.
The gameplay is largely watching your own story unfold from dynamic events, and how you or other characters react to them.
Did your Sim get fired at work? He'll be sad now. Does his child need help with homework? The father can't help, he autonomously won't do anything he doesn't like unless told. That child can get bad grades and grow up with poor traits such as hot-headed, influencing game play as that sim, and how that sim affects others around him.
I recommend anyone else here interested in emergent storytelling take a look at Rimworld- It's one of my favorite games, and it'll be out on steam in July.

I got too sucked into playing the Sims. It happens every time, especially with 2 and 3. I'd waste hours away playing sims and living vicariously and felt really bad because while my character had lots of sex and worked out, I did not.
So I stopped playing and tl;dr I workout and have lots of sex now. It's a really fun game, but I can't hel[p but feel as if playing the sims is a waste of time when you play games like Bomber Man, Soul Calibur, MGS, Shenmue, etc, there's an actual point - you can't do the things you can do in the Sims.
But the best part of the sims has always been construction, I feel like that has the most utility in this game.

3 is the best but you have to deal with the fact that you load it up and you'll be looking at a loading screen for quite a while. Apart from that fact, you get the full neighborhood experience which adds a lot, you get customizable furniture and such, expansions tend to add the most.
