Before anything else, Cyberpunk existed as a fictional representation of a "high tech low life" society. Meaning the technology has to act or appear more sophisticated than where it's being used. Sorry to spoil whatever fake idea you had of it, but it's incredibly easy to label shit as Cyberpunk nowadays. It doesn't need be always night, and the characters don't need to be half android with bright green hair.

I have played it, and it's not really cyberpunk
Cyberpunk is usually defined as
>massive, densely-packed, neon-lit skyscrapers that fill the skyline
>flying cars
>some sort of body augmentation aspect or cyborgs
>militarized police force
>hacking
Even though WD has hacking it's missing all the other aspects, it's set in modern day chicago
>>
If I had to read one cyberpunk book, which one should it be?
>>
>>341992769
It's nice to see that people still understand this point. I'm writing a short novel that starts out cyberpunk and transitions into sci-fi and if anyone ever reads it, they'd probably just label it as cyberpunk which isn't what I'm going for, cause the core theme is change and the progression between stages of life and how it can affect someone in an impersonal society.

>all those aspects

Those are the results, not the symptoms. As this Anon >>341992769 has said, Cyberpunk has always been high tech low life, and the aesthetic choices you've listed are a result of it.

Don't treat cyberpunk like steampunk, unlike steampunk, cyberpunk not only has a common aesthetic but common themes that come with it.

Games like Cybermancy and MGS4 can easily be classified as cyberpunk despite not having the aesthetic, but because it has themes of cyberpunk

The most accurate definition is "sci-fi noir" with its pessimism, ambiguity, depression, cynism, "high tech, low life"

"Classic cyberpunk characters were marginalized, alienated loners who lived on the edge of society in generally dystopic futures where daily life was impacted by rapid technological change, an ubiquitous datasphere of computerized information, and invasive modification of the human body."

Thus said, Crime and punishment is cyberpunk, in terms of its characters, atmosphere and philosophy, and Watch Dogs is yet another downgraded ubisoft cash grab with edgy hacking for 12year-olds.
>>
>>341992942
Nope. That's not what defines it at all. General science fiction, maybe.
Sophisticated tech in a meager environment, with a powerful corporate presence is what defines it and should be the foundation for all cyberpunk, not purely aesthetics.

cyberpunk does indeed have the aesthetic choices and the setting wired to it, which can be seen in the novels/movies which coined the genre itself

Butts set ablaze every time people discuss genres and whether or not something falls into them.

Cyberpunk as any other genre is a collection of tropes, the more of these tropes particular movie, game or book taps, the more cyberpunk it is.
Something can be very cyberpunk as Neuromancer, or barely cyberpunk as Mirrors Edge. Shadowrun has fucking orcs and elves off all things, but people still call it cyberpunk because it has many cyberpunk tropes (more than fantasy ones). So just chill and don't start holy wars over this. I hope i was of help

>It doesn't need be always night, and the characters don't need to be half android with bright green hair.

true, those are only the hallmarks of the genre and of course the writer can play with them as he likes. its always night and raining in most cyberpunk settings because the genre has strong ties to noir, and because the genre defining novels/movies had that setting

the only thing that separates watch dogs from being a regular shooter set in 2014 is that MC has a phone in his pocket that he can magically change billboards and traffic lights. otherwise he's literally a guy with a gun in 2014

if you think that instantly makes it cyberpunk i'm concerned that you might have legit retardation

This.

I used this as the thesis for an essay back in high school, comparing cyberpunk works at the time (this was around 2009 iirc) with stuff from the 80s, showing how the contemporary stuff took place in fairly realistic, very near future settings, whereas the classics often took place several decades (or even centuries) into the future. I used this to try and demonstrate just how closely the current day resembles a cyberpunk setting in every meaningful way, really only missing the stylistic stuff like katanas and goggles.

>true, those are only the hallmarks of the genre

Cyberpunk is about its themes. A world where computers have broken down personal privacy, where corporations have too much power and world governments are losing power to them. It's about a counter-culture within these settings that acts as a subversive element.

That's why cyberpunk is so terrifying these days: You can write a story that takes place in this year, invoking nothing but existing trends and technologies, and it can still be totally cyberpunk.

You need to stop defining the genre by superficial visuals you see in artwork and actually read some of the literature that comprise the genre. You'll notice that there's a lot more to Cyberpunk than just neon signs, trenchcoats and goggles.

the point wasnt in starting holy wars

the point is that some kids genuinely think if something has like 3-4 tropes which appear in the cyberpunk genre it's instantly cyberpunk

its because you have delusional people like >>341992541 and >>341994197 believing that if a genre has a trope shared with cyberpunk (watch dogs had hacking and mirror's edge had oppressive megacorps) ITS CYBERPUNK GUYS LOL LOOK. thing is, i can bet they never really read or watched works of art which coined the genre and set the example because otherwise they wouldn't talk nonsense

shadowrun? yes, it's cyberpunk. classic cyberpunk setting + fantasy races.

mirror's edge and watch dogs? no. only has a couple tropes that happen to appear in cyberpunk

Let's not become /mu/ and start inventing increasingly specific subgenres just so we can masterbate how good we are at describing stories.

Cyberpunk is a perfectly accurate term to describe Watch Dogs.

>technology is dominated by connectivity and social network in daily life

This is literally the biggest most important piece of almost every major work of cyberpunk literature from when the genre started. Snow Crash has the Metaverse. Neuromancer has the Matrix. Hell, even fucking Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep has Mercerism which kinda does that.

So the defining aspect of "digipunk" is something that has already been at the core of Cyberpunk forever, which means that it's just cyberpunk with a meaningless distinction because the works aren't old enough or something.

if *you'd* actually read the lit you're talking about, you'd realise that the setting makes the difference. you can write a story about all that you mentioned, and it would have the same underlying themes as cyberpunk, but it won't be cyberpunk.

What about this doesn't scream "oldschool liberal uncle rants about the dangers of conservatism"? No one is going to make a proper cyberpunk game because you don't want to alienate half of your audience.

>you can write a story about all that you mentioned, and it would have the same underlying themes as cyberpunk, but it won't be cyberpunk.

Saying it doesn't make it true anon.

You can insist that the aesthetic is the defining characteristic of the genre all you want, but there are plenty of stories which lack that aesthetic that are widely considered to be Cyberpunk.

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, Ready Player One by some guy, The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. These are Cyberpunk works and their settings don't resemble your neon-noire description at all.

Now as much as I love us flinging shit at each other, and it really is quite a special thing we're sharing here, ultimately we're going to weasel ourselves into he said / she said territory.

It's not about struggle, its about outsiders, those who were thrown out of the society and now they have to survive on their own, but they do not fight the system, they are outside of it and don't give a fuck. Classic cyberpunk is basically about bums with augs. All that actiona and struggle shit is for tennagers postcyberpunk.

Neal Stephenson wrote Snow Crash as well as The Diamond Age, which kinda sorta take place in the same continuity but are totally unrelated and the shared setting is never confirmed. Regardless, they're both outrageously entertaining novels that deal with a lot of the themes that make Cyberpunk cool. The Diamond Age is especially cool for how it deals with class division. Snow Crash just has prose so fucking cool it will melt your face off.

Cyberpunk is enough of a niche that most lists you'll find of quality works will be pretty reliably good. Neal Stephenson is the one author I'll go out of my way to recommend though, but that's probably because I'm currently balls deep in a pretty long Stephenson kick. Just finished Cryptonomicon and am reading The Baroque Cycle Volume 1, neither of which are Cyberpunk but are fucking swell.

It's fucking terrible. There's a good story in there somewhere, but it is absolutely BURIED in masterbatory 80s pop culture faffing. I wouldn't say I regret reading it, but he needed an editor to slap him with his manuscript and say "NO FUCKER YOU DON'T NEED AN ENTIRE CHAPTER THAT'S JUST THE MOVIE WAR GAMES IN FIRST PERSON."

Ironically the most creative and interesting part of the book was when the main character was totally detached from the Oasis and sold himself into slavery to get close to the villains.

You can skip it unless you can stomach "OMG THE 80S WAS SO EPIC LOL!"

>>341996823
On the contrary, they are PART of the system. Case and Molly and all of the OG characters ended up working for the corps and playing their game just like everyone else. That no one is actually fighting the system does not mean the theme is not class struggle.

It is really hard to say the bums were "thrown out" of society when they make the majority of it and the system is based on them being as they are. A cruel dichotomy between the corp-employed haves and the guttersnipe have-nots. Tech, entertainment, media keep the masses occupied and relatively docile so the system can keep running.

>Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
Genre: Young Adult/Science Fiction

>Ready Player One
Hard science fiction and dystopian

>The Diamond Age
Science fiction novel
postcyberpunk

Sources: goodreads/wiki

once again, these are just novels that happen to share the same dystopian + technology tropes as cyberpunk. the very few people who actually did tag some as cyberpunk on goodreads were most probably as confused as you about what is cyberpunk.

now hey, let's take some actual neon-noire trenchgoggle aug cyberspace stuff you seem to bash so hard and see if it's any different

>Johnny Mnemonic is a 1995 Canadian-American cyberpunk action thriller film
>Neuromancer is a 1984 novel by William Gibson, a seminal work in the cyberpunk genre
>AKIRA Genre Cyberpunk

i can really paste a fuckload more of these staple cyberpunk movies/novels/games with the neon noir futuristic setting andyou know they will actually be classified as cyberpunk

once again you seem to confuse this with sci-fi, which shares some tropes with cyberpunk. cyberpunk is technically science fiction, but a certain setting and aesthetic sets it apart, which was the whole point of distinguishing that genre in the first place.

or you think that if something has the same central underlying theme as cyb (hackers/privacy/police state or megacorps/dystopia) its instantly classified as cyberpunk

sorry, its not
>>
>>341997664
I think his work changed in tone but is still excellent. Less guns, noir and macho bullshit. More thought.
>>
>>341997341

You know I talked to a friend of mine who loved the book, and when I told him that the 80s shit was too much he just told me "well you have to be into that stuff."

That pissed me off. I like almost everything that the book referenced. War Games is a fantastic film. It wasn't the subject matter it was referencing, it was just how over the top and masterbatory the references were. It was substituting its own identity and original setting for a pastiche of every other setting that existed, and its pace broke down because it had to keep explaining its references way too much.

It was also really inconsistent. If you're going to use that much pop-culture in your novel, you either have to assume that your read already gets it, or that they don't and then you explain things. This book went into ridiculous detail about some stuff and then didn't even bother explaining other stuff, which was a huge pacing problem unto itself. What happens when you're not familiar with D&D mechanics during the D&D scene and the author didn't bother explaining? I guess you're just not going to be able to follow the next scene. Don't get 80s sitcoms? I sure hope you don't mind a few pages of that.

Like I said, there's a good story in there somewhere, he just needed a way better editor to reign him in.

Also the "nice guy" stuff at the end was adorable. "Omg the love interest has scars on her face IRL but I don't care because I'm the nice guy and I think she's the most beautiful person in the world anyways!" Those passages almost felt like a beta-male author was trying to prove to women reading the book that he was worthy of their loins.

Have you missed the socket? Do you see women on the image? No? You unplug your cybercock when you don't need it kids so it doesn't eat your batteries.

I remember reading an interview in which they said that they'll do EYE2 100% as long as they have money and it will be a sort of SWAT 4 style game where you play as cops.

No Anon, you misunderstand me.

I AM into those things. I was into all of those things. Almost every movie, television show, video game and other thing referenced in Ready Player One was a thing that I liked.

But you can't just reference a bunch of things I like to make a good story. When you're totally inconsistent with your prose and make huge sacrifices in storytelling just to cram in as many references as possible, the resulting novel is an incoherent mess.

It's like one of those "epic meme" indie games that is just a broken-ass runner game, but every tile is some stupid reddit meme. It is devoid of merit and constructed entirely of disparate bricks referencing other stuff.
