technically, since im slightly autistic, Red would be considered a side-boss, a post game battle. He's not necessary to beat in order to become Champion, just a test of true skills.
That said, its probably one of the best boss battles in gaming period. All you go through, trainers, gym leaders, team rocket, most times some form of mythical beast or manmade killing machine gone rogue, it's all just an appetizer to Red.

If he was under leveled not much he could do. You can't really just grind away to progress through dmc. It's dependent on your own skills and there is a lot more leeway with how far skill will take you. You can't just keep running through the same sections until the enemies are dying from anything and everything you throw at them with no effort if thats what you want like in pokemon.Also dmc 3 just by itself on normal is small time.

it's honestly one of the only genuinely "bad" final boss fights in all of video game. No, not just because it's hard, but because it ignores all the rules that you learned through the game and requires a completely different set of strategies to defeat. You can have a build that demolishes 99% of the game, but then get wrecked by the flaship because the fight changes all the rules for no reason. And you can't even learn those rules ahead of time, you just have to keep fighting it over multiple games until you learn its bizarre pattern which is used nowhere else.
So fuck this fight.

The main difference between the qte's in platinum games and resident evil, is that resident evil qte's could happen at anytime, and were generally used as a change of color in gamepla, or just a replacement for it. QTE's in platinum games are like a reward for finsishing a fight. They indicate the end of a boss battle or that you have reached a checkppint. There is nothing more satsifying after beating a difficult boss in bayonetta 2 than summoming an enslaved demon king and ripping the boss in half.

It was legitimately worrying to fight him for the first time. I don't think anyone actually survived the intial encounter with him since it came out of nowhere. The way he played even made him seem like an anomaly or a supposed-to-lose fight.

I understand its there to allow you to damage hull because it will repair broken sections automatically, but it doesn't make much sense for it to get a power boost by killing all the crew.
It would make more sense for the autorepair AI to be active to begin with, and killing the crew helps with overloading the AI and forcing it to choose between manning stations and repairing the ship when they are all dead.

I actually feel like they put Iris as the champion just because she was in the anime at the time. The TWO times you meet her before you find out that she's a champion are incredibly brief. At least Cynthia had impact on the story, ESPECIALLY in Platinum.

1 on 1, a turn based system will boil down to that. Pokemon is in an awkward position where you have a team and that can sometimes make the difference, but the gameplay itself is 1 on 1 so it ultimately boils down to that. Other RPGs tend to have you with a full team on the field and working together to drop a train on that nigga so most RPGs don't apply to what you said.
Say what you will, but this whole chain of fights was a great way to end off the game. Bringing Darkside back and having that whole Ansem-ship thing was pretty rad.

I remember someone on /vp/ mentioned on one of the early builds of DP, her Garchomp was haxed, like literally, it had a nature that increased SpDef without lowering anything else, so capturing in under the effects of common "catch trainer's mons" codes would freeze the game.
I mean it doesn't make her super challenging, but it says a ot about devs trying to make her as difficult as possible. She (rightfully) has the smartest AI of the game, and all her mons have their best possible ability and nature with at least 20 IVs on every stat, with really good movesets that complement each other, not to mention she has pokemon you have not seen in the game at all until that point

I think ordinary trainers in the newer games still use that method, but occasionally they go in and fix the movesets if it would be really dumb.

1) The flagship's special weapons break the conventions of the module system. All of them come from nowhere and are impossible to disable. Disable the drone module on phase 2? Too bad, it can still use the drone barrage.
2) The special weapons break the rules that all weapon types follow. For example, the passive zoltan shield in phase 3 can regenerate. That's literally cheating, as the zoltan shield augment (which you've fought countless times before) explicitly doesn't do that. And as above, you cannot disable it.
3) The ship switches to auto-pilot + auto-repair when all crew is dead. This creates a bizarre scenario in which it's better to kill off every enemy crew member but 1, and leave him alive. Also a giant middle finger to boarding builds.
4) An obvious one, it breaks the energy/system balance and has cheat weapons instead of normal ones. In particular the triple shot missile launcher is hilariously OP. If you don't know ahead of time that it's by far its most dangerous normal weapon and should be disabled as soon as possible, you're fucked. Also, it has infinite missiles. This is literally the only enemy in that game that has infinite missiles. All the rest eventually run out.
But my biggest personal gripe is that fighting the flagship requires completely different builds and strategies from the rest of the game. For example, specialized boarding ships wreck the normal game, but are extreme weak against the flagship. There are basically only two strats against the flagship: 1) massive weapon barrage like flak/laser, or 2) beam weapons like glaive beam. The flagship's contrast from the main game is especially obvious if you ever used the glaive beam. Fight normal ships? Glaive beam is not really worth the investment. Flagship? Glaive beam will fucking destroy it. Same thing for cloaking/hacking, they are almost mandatory for the flagship while being optional for other fights. It's all stupid.
Hands down the most visually stunning boss I've ever fought.

Why can't champions go back to that? I am totally fine with making them practically cheat. Obviously not give a Fire type of theirs Leaf Storm or something, but up the stats, raise the IVs, make the champion the best AI, and just make the fight actually fun and worthy of a champion. It's not as hard as the others, and focuses more on surviving long enough to the end rather than surviving against the bosses. There's a lot of fights though, so you get a good amount of healing items.
