Fourth Fire Emblem game. Japan only, but has a new translation patch that actually translates the whole game.

I play the game and you suggest how I do it. There's a lot of factors to decide on, such as who gets specific items and how certain units interact. There's a generation decision, so these decisions have huge impacts.

Here's the lineup. Oifey is merely a tactician, he can't fight.
Sigurd has the best growths despite being a "pre-promote". Level doesn't reset on promotion so what this means is that Sigurd already gets his promo boosts early. That's amazing.
The skills everyone has are weird for those who don't know FE4. Sigurd and Alec have pursuit, which allows them to double attack enemies. Arden has vantage, which works like in later games. Noish can do crits, which require that skill or another thing I'll get to later, and can randomly have battles last more than 1 round.
There's no deployment cap, so everyone gets to fight all the time. Except Arden, he's slow.

Nihil in 4 doesn't negate all skills. Just sword skills and criticals.
Sigurd is a crusader descendant, and the status screen shows it. He has super glowly Baldur, which means he gets a growths boost and can use the Holy Weapon Sword associated with that Crusader. Holy Blood is good, you want to have it.
All the other scrubs lack it.
Weapon ranks in this game never go up on levels or with usage. They are determined by Class and Holy Blood. To sum up, Alec is stuck with a C in lances until he promotes.

Its helpful as it negates stuff like Horseslayer. Effective weapons auto-crit. Crits also just double your overall power rather than triple the damage you were going to do.

Time for you to select how I handle saves/Difficulty.
Clever AI doesn't make the enemies stronger, just slightly smarter(usually).
The game saves every chapter, but due to them being huge you can save at the start of every turn.
The way I figured this would work is that I set it to autosave every turn, but I can't reset unless the game itself ends. As much as I'd like to go full ironman, having the entire run end 2 hours from the end after 40 hours of gametime would suck.
Up to you. Pick how you want saves and AI.
warning you now, you want autosaves. Turns can take a long time in this game and I doubt you want me to repeat 30 minutes of shit if I fuck up.

While you decide that, let's look at Midir v Gandolf. While the odds look shitty for Midir, the Hand Axe Gandolf has weighs a fuckton and that Skill Ring won't improve crit rate as he lacks the skill. Castle boosts mean that Midir should be able to hold out for a bit.

The AI will make dumb choices either way. Pretty sure pros switch between the AIs just to manipulate good stuff.
Anyways, Noish weakens a guy and Sigurd finishes. This seems like the backwards way to do it, but Noish honestly sucks.

FE4's game mechanics aren't the greatest but there's still quite a lot you can do to avoid taking that 3% chance. I almost always play ironman and a lot of the fun comes from planning out and executing a 99.99% reliable strategy.
You can beat FE4 by just sending your units into the fray without thinking, but it's more fun if you take skills, leadership, charisma, staves, etc. into consideration.

Azel and Lex seem good but have issues. Axes and Fire magic weigh a fuckton. This is a problem later on as it kills their evasion and Azel can't double reliably. Thankfully, Lex has Paragon, which makes up for it.
Both can Talk to Sigurd. Talks sometimes give more than dialogue. You can get stats and even weapons.

While even I'm getting tired of constantly explaining mechanics, Villages in this game always give gold. Bandits take 10 turns to destroy villages. Every hit the village takes reduces the reward of 5000 G by 500 G. Sometimes villages give a bonus reward with the cash.
azel has nice legs. First time playing this game I didn't patch it and thought Azel was a girl and Lex's girlfriend.

Sigurd levels up and shows off a new feature for Project Naga. Normally the +1 goes away after each stat but now level up screens work like later games. For someone like me, this helps make sure I don't need to remember the stats and tell you them in text.
Sigurd getting defense is important. Sigurd also is incapable of getting an empty level up.HIS HP GROWTH IS 110%

The original translation was incomplete. This new one has everything translated, fixed a bunch of glitches from the original game like Sylvia's dance glitch, empty level ups glitch, inheritance overflow glitch and implemented neat QoL things like level ups staying on screen instead of each stat appearing individually.

Quan has Major Nova blood, and Ethlin has Minor Baldur. Thanks to that, Ethlin has an A in swords instead of a B.
Because they are in love, Ethlin and Quan can give cash to each other. They also can crit when next to each other. This applies to Siblings, so Sigurd can crit when near Ethlyn.
Much like Pent and Louise, if Quan is KO'd, so is Ethlyn, and vice-versa.
New skills. Adept lets Quan attack twice randomly, and Fin gets an evasion boost when near death.

Shin mode has some nice ideas being thrown in along with shit ones, like throwing that shitty Darkness Sword in lots of bosses just for the kicks. Also giving Critical to random enemies is fucking brutal in a game where crit is skill% with no true hit, it just makes things really annoying.

FE4 is cool even in vanilla because of the different pairings you can try. Try Shin mode, but if I remember right it also autopatches the old translation, you'll need to check.
I liked how they implemented the pursuit system, with only infantry being able to use it.
I hate how you can grind forever if you want in the later games. Arena abuse was enough but I seriously hope no one was grinding when they played awakening or used that awful casual mode.

Binary hacks are the best since they range from simple balance patches to full out character swapping goodness like a universe where Lex is the main character.

Kind of. Binary added stuff like weapons (killing edges), branched promotions, and with them, new classes (stuff like Iron Knight, which gives Arden a horse), and made the game much harder.
There's also dismounting for everyone, a version that updates portraits, you can use all the holy weapons (yes, even Valflame provided you have someeone with at least minor Fala), etc.

Azel safely attacks the boss from a distance and we find out that Aideen's sister was killed by pirates.
I remember my first playthrough of FE4. I thought Leif and Seliph were shit. I was so surprised when I saw their growth rates and Leifs promotion gains. I guess it doesn't really matter I'm just happy that FE5 wasn't my first game

Midir is still alive somehow, and joins us on our quest.
A nearby village has a Speed Ring as a reward. We can rearrange items later, but it costs some cash as we need to sell and rebuy things.
The Speed Ring gives +5 speed and the people who benefit most from it are our units with Pursuit. That includes Sigurd, Alec, Azel, Finn, and now Midir. You guys can give it to Arden if you want.

Lewyn isn't the best parent for any pair of children period. You get one amazing kid thanks to Forseti and one okish one due to no Pursuit.
For raw damage output and actually getting a horse at a decent time, Lex is better for Taillte because both children turn into murder machines at the expense of you not being able to spam Fortify (you get them to the range by forfeitting/losing one arena battle). While Claude is better for Fury because of the absurd Res and staffing you get, Ced is already tight as fuck with combat thanks to Aura anyway.
Forseti isn't even that good outside of being a one turn nuke. The Spd bonus you get is so absurd that enemies outright ignore its user most of the time, making it shit for enemy phase.

Rather than guard the castle himself, he will rush towards us.
here's a helpful AI behavior. Certain "squad leaders" will start to run back to their castle when low on HP. If they make it back, they get more enemies and heal up. This can be used to help get EXP if you want to. I do not recommend doing it here though.

Arenas are specfic to each map that has them(which is almost all of them). There's a set amount of fighters each guy can face, and they get harder the more you fight. If you lose, you only get booted out at 1HP. No gold penalty, no death.
You can tell how far a guy got by arena level.

Lex is not very good for the Tordo kids. The ambush + wrath combo is good, but Lex passes terrible magic and skill. You need a magic ring and the thoron tome to OHKO with wrath, but you're fucked if you miss and there's only one thoron tome so only one kid can fight. And it's particularly unsafe against bosses, whereas Holsety on a horse can mow down armies and take out bosses as well. And Tinny benefits more from Levin's magic than from Lex especially when using staves.
I think there's even a case for Azel > Lex.

With Tordo blood and support bonuses they'll never have skill issues period and thanks to how Crit works in this game, they're guaranteed to OHKO pretty much anything in the game other than bosses (they can do that to a lot of them, but Pavise makes it risky to do). Crits are Attack * 2 - Def/Res. Having high Mag is not necessary to rape things with Wrath + Vantage, because with Magic ring and an El tome you're already doing 38 raw damage alone - that before factoring in their stats. Arthur comes with 8 Mag as base, so that's already 54 damage. On average he'll gain 4 Mag - you're at 62. With promotion bonuses, which you get pretty quickly thanks to Paragon? +6 damage. You're at 68 damage with an El tome with that shitty Mag. Use Thoron and you have 12 extra damage. That's 80 raw damage you're dealing.
Tinni is the same thing, but with more Mag, being able to reach 88 with Thoron and 76 with an El tome. This combo is powerful as fuck because not only the raw damage they deal is absurd, enemies have really, really shitty res. Even other mages.
I never saw the kids have any non 100% in all the times I tried this combo. The only downside is that you can't spam Fortify, other than that it's perfect. Forseti gives you one godlike kid that can actually be shitty during enemy phase if they get enough evade so the enemies get 0 hit on them.

The Jealousy System is a branch of the Love System in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War that affects Love growth.
Normally opposite-gender characters can only get the additional Love bonus of 5 points per turn by waiting adjacent to each other. If another female character waits adjacent to the first female in the pair, they will steal the adjacent Love bonus from the first female if they have higher priority for the male.
This effect stacks for multiple males and females. The most useful application is to have the benefiting female wait 1 square diagonally from the male, with two lower priority females in between them to make a square-shaped formation. That way, the female will steal both lots of the adjacent Love bonus, allowing them to gain an additional Love bonus of 10 points per turn instead of 5, thus speeding up Love growth.

Holyn is a good choice. Her kids will have very good HP growth. Last time I beat the game, Ulster easily capped out HP and Lakche's HP was very good, too. Holyn will also pass down his swords to Ulster as well.
