The first game is kinda clunky at first but enjoyable. The second fixes some of the problems of the first but is severely hindered by DSiWare restrictions. SatPC is a massive improvement from RR and ironically uses a completely different playstyle from the first two. HGH returns to the original playstyle but seems to be improving on a lot of mechanics.

Risky's Revenge is good but short since they were planning on making it the first episode in an episodic series but that didn't pan out.
Pirate's Curse is the most recent and pretty much everyone agrees it's the best.
My advice is to start with Pirate's Curse and if you find that you really love the characters and the world then the other two are worth a try. The same guy did the music for all of them.

I'd argue the areas aren't as fun to traverse as the previous games, especially areas like Messy Bog where you have to stop every two feet due to another thing being in the ground or jumping around(I quite liked the transformations aiding you in getting around), and you get Cannon so late into the game that you've pretty much gotten everything it could be used to make easier and more enjoyable so you only really have the final dungeons handful of rooms and that's it. The dungeons were great though, they felt way more fleshed out.
Risky's Revenge honestly felt like it had way more fun areas to traverse even though it was much more condensed compared to the first and third games, and the only time I didn't care to explore in that game was that awful section where you have to slowly hop between those moving platforms as monkey over bottomless pits.

I meant just as a casual player going for the wallpaper and not as a speedrunner. I have a guide up for it but I think I can do it without, the only thing that would be a bit tough to remember would be the dark energy enemies that require you to speed boost into a wall. Managing to get enough jewels also seems like a really tough thing since even in my casual 100% first playthrough where I killed everything I saw I still had to farm the zombies.

The first Shantae has extremely small field of view. This coupled with how huge the enemies are and how they respawn gets extremely annoying extremely quick. A good example is those awful Mantis enemies, the desert in general, and the nagas. They just slow the game down to a crawl when you have to fight each and every one or risk taking a bunch of damage. Hitting enemies with your hair also felt way off, the later games are so good with how the hair feels that the first one is painful with how slow, short, and awkward it is to use.

Truth be told, it isn't as terrible as /v/ makes it out to be. However, it's not particularly great either.
The boosts you get from absorbing enemies are barely noticable half the time. The enemies themselves hardly pose a threat due to absorption mechanic. The stages range from eh to "like that one stage but worse" and often won't introduce the stage's interesting gimmick until right before the boss. The bosses themselves aren't bad, but they're kinda easy as far as MM bosses go. The plot throws a bunch of characters and concepts at you in order to try to make it seem more interesting than just "stop Dr. Wily" but it somehow makes the story less interesting in the process since you don't really care about any of these things.
It's not a bad game, but it could've been better (especially for the supposed grand revival of MM).
