This is one of the two arguments that arena shooter nostoligiafags use to rationalize disparaging any new arena shooter out hand and never playing it.
At their core, A.S.N.F do not actually want to play arena shooters (otherwise they would be playing quake or ut right now), but rather use arena shooters as an excuse to be contrarian about contemporary games. This is why every arena shooter is dead (including quake live), but you have all these mouth breathers who come out of the woodwork claiming that they wish people would bring back arena shooters because COD/BF/etc. totally sucks man. This phenomenon also applies in spades for RTS games.

I genuinely feel sorry for the companies that get duped by these losers into making arena shooters and old school shooters in general, under the impression that a market exists for them (e.g. toxikk, reflex, ROTT).

Perfect balance does not mean that all weapons are equal in all situations. Obviously machinegun is weak, but its your starting weapons, rail is good for sniping, shaft for middle, and RL and plasma for close range combat, grenade launcher is good for map control, in other words the game does three things:
1. It encourages you to switch weapons depending on situation

So I tried to play Quake a few times previously, but I just couldn't get into it. Same with Quake 2.

Today I installed a mod called "Quake 1.5" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60wQD1u4VZg&ab_channel=jackoneill45) and now I found myself enjoying it a lot more. I figured out what was my problem with Quake.

The guns are ass.

In an FPS the most important thing is arguably the guns and Quake's guns just felt so lame after playing Doom, it's hard to imagine it's done by the same guys. Now if only there was a mod that added muzzle flashes to Quake 2 that would be grand.

I find it a shame that the new Quake will be multiplayer only, because there's a lot of potential in the series for an amazing singleplayer game, especially Quake 1's weird giant electric yetis.

They just added casual/competitive rulesets, downloading maps from the workshop instead of the server (so you never need to worry if a server has a map when you callvote [map], it just pulls it from the workshop if it doesn't and you're good to go), xp (meaningless for now), performance pass, and an experimental ruleset to play with weapon damage values and phyiscs. I've had the game since it's been in EA and it feels like the player retention, average playtime is better recently.

I'm mostly a casual player and have been able to find ffa servers whenever I've tried playing.

Honestly, Reflex has slightly fewer players than the new UT.

At this point, I think it's a race to whichever game has proper matchmaking first.

Quakespasm will be your go-to port. The Steam version is the same GLQuake exe that's been around since the nineties; you'll just need to copy over the \id1 folder from your game install.

Also go online and find a download for the soundtrack because the Steam version doesn't fucking come with it.

There is, at least for arena fpses in general. Most of these games have about 20-100 players a piece (exception is QL with ~800-900) with a good deal of crossover, and there's about 8-9 of these games. I don't think it's a large audience, but there's a group of semi-dedicated arena fps players.

If a single game came out and took over the market, it'd probably have 5-7k concurrents, which is more than enough for 1v1, but kind of sparse for team games (still not bad though).

The players being fickle and willing to drop a game at a moments notice probably doesn't help things for devs, and the lack of a marquee gametype splits the small community down further. AFPS for some people means ffa, whereas for others it's only duel or tdm (or ca or ctf).

None of these games have any modern amenities either. QL sort of has them, and Reflex is starting to implement them.

The Tribes community has a similar issue, but it's less fractured because of fewer games.

Quakespasm doesn't have the original quit messages, though, which are an essential part of the Quake experience.

I don't recall seeing the Skarrj in Deus Ex. Or the Flak Cannon or the Reedemer, for that matter. And I'm pretty sure no Unreal title took place on Earth. But the Ranger, as well as the Nailgun and all the gothic architecture from the Quake campaign, all make an appearance in Team Fortress.

So, not really the same thing.

Is a completely meaningless point for trying to argue that two games are themselves comparable.

For that matter, you could easily replace all the textures, character models and props in Deus Ex with stuff lifted wholesale from the original Unreal to produce a game using the same core engine and art assets, but it would still be fucking stupid to say inventory management, a skill system and reduced accuracy while running were gameplay features that you should expect in Unreal games because they appeared in Deus Ex. Likewise, just because Team Fortress introduced class systems and unique abilities doesn't mean that those are part of the gameplay characteristic of the Quake series.
