People will shit on graphics being useless, but updating graphics every generation does add a bit of variety and uniqueness to a game. I think the WiiU did a good job of doing that, after 99% of the Wii's library looked bland and uninspiring visually.
On top of that, things like framerate, draw distance, special effects, and number of objects allowed on the screen can have an actual effect on gameplay. The difference from Xenoblade to XCX is uncanny with the updated specs.

This is the problem. Nintendo CAN'T win when it comes to multiplats. Wii U only got two years of game support thanks to the droughts. Not even two "good" years, just two years total. I'm fine with a short console life as long as the library justifies it. Wii U didn't accomplish that. Hell, Wii U's life didn't even really begin until Pikmin 3 came out which was 9 months after launch.

It's almost like power does not matter. If you ask me, the NX could do extremely well if it can carve out a niche. Make the console a little stronger then the WiiU, but release it CHEAP at $200. Have amazing games that people want, ZeldaWinds, XenoX, Retro Metroid, Smash, Pokemon, bring out all the guns. Pay for exclusive third party games, ala Bayonetta 2. Have a massive digital library, basically if possible release everything the WiiU has, and the Wii, along with new stuff like digital Gamecube games.
Nintendo will never properly compete with the others again, mostly because third party hate them. So Nintendo should do their own thing. So Nintendo fans will still buy the hardware, but you can also get others to consider getting the NX on the side for the couple exclusives they want, if the hardware is cheap enough. What people are failing to realize is the scorpio and neo are only for 4k. As long as the nx is stronger than the ps4/one then its going to be the best because the ps4 and xbox are going to hold back the games graphics. When adding Nintendo console development to your project is significantly harder than adding ps4 when you support xbone or pc (or vice versa) due to architecture differences and significant asset tier differences, you are less likely to care about that exoense.

At least with the N64 breaking the ground into 3D gameplay, it was a good controller. Not the greatest of controllers (looking at you, Mario Party) due to how you played with it.
Gamecube controllers basically went on to be the base formula for how a controller SHOULD be. I mean, look at the original Xbox controller and tell me Microsoft didn't take some cues from the GC controller for their future controllers. Going from a giant brick of a controller to a slimmed down version that you can easily grip in your hands REALLY sounds like a gimmick, if you ask me.
The things I would do for a well done Pokemon main game on an actual home console (or hybrid) as well as a new Monster Hunter made for that.

At the end of the day it is killer apps that make a system sell. Not necessarily power or even the amount of games but simply what big games it has. The PS4 has Madden, NBA, MLB and Fifa and thus will always be the top dog. There was a time where Zelda was a major system seller and I think it still is somewhat but it definitely is not the same kind of system seller that it used to be.
That's all Nintendo needs, a game that EVERYONE wants. I have no doubt that around the NX release they'll have a direct that shows a bunch of games coming out for the NX but like I said before it's very rarely about the amount of games. Even I'll admit that I bought my Playstation 2 so I could play Final Fantasy X, the fact that it also had a bunch of other good games on it was more of a bonus then anything else.

I think what modern game development proves is that you cannot make a game in 1080 HD graphics or more without a considerable amount of manpower and money. And if you don't have that, you have a lot of time. I think the plateau of game development is reached when it jeapordizes gameplay decisions and enforces preorders and DLC. And we have hit it. An exodus needs to happen across the industry where only a set budget standard is set that games should never go over to reduce development times, while reducing pressure and increasing the game quality. 1080 HD was a mistake.

The time I started to get upset with Nintendo was when I went to a friend's house and he showed me his PS4. I only played a demo of a JRPG, nothing special, but what really impressed me was the speed and responsiveness of the menus within it, and the fact that when you plug a headphone into your DS4 the TV is automatically silent.
After that, coming back to my WiiU and 3DS taking ages to load eShop and the Internet Browser, never was the same...

I play Nintendo games for the entertainment, just as he said. The graphics on games like Yoshi's Wooly World and Super Mario 3D World couldn't be better. We're also at the point where, because of development costs, 3rd party exclusives are becoming more and more rare. They're all pretty much multiplats these days. Therefore, and I'm not even sure if they realize this or not, but if Nintendo doesn't make their hardware on par or at least compatible with their competitors, their major 3rd party support will basically be non-exclusive save for a few exclusivity deals with smaller companies. (Like what happened with Monster Hunter)
They need to make a unique system because of how late they are to the game this generation, but at the same time they'll have a repeat of the Wii U if they go too crazy.

The specs play a significant part. You already have to build for two different SKUs in the Xbone and the PS4, then throw PC into the mix and the endless headaches that creates, now throw a fourth completely underpowered SKU into the mix that has a tiny audience.
It becomes super easy to cut one of these things out as it is, throw in the weird quirks/gimmicks that a nintendo console comes with and their general attitude and it becomes a no brainer.
Only thing I'm worried about is the NX having the next Monster hunter or being able to play 3DS games because I just bought the N3DS.
I'm betting on Nintendo not being twisted enough to release a new 3DS and then immediately release something better.

I mean he says it in the interview itself. He says we're not going to be in that Red Ocean with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo has been pursuing a Blue Ocean strategy for a while now, it worked with the Wii, not so much for Wii U I'd say but I don't think it was the content that is to blame for that. I think they just reached a point of saturation , and with mobile gaming becoming so popular they're going to have a tough battle with the NX. But it's still an easier battle than going head to head with Microsoft and Sony.
