AlphaDream played it safe with the locations and characters because they didn't want to muddy the game up with an overly complicated crossover plot and instead wanted to focus on the interactions between the 2D and 3D characters and weave a story around that.

Miyamoto or whatever has no control over the direction of Mario & Luigi and his only suggestion to Paper Jam was using the X button to jump all three characters. The Dream Team Iwata Asks also talks about how AlphaDream clashed with Nintendo on decisions to take M&L in, but AlphaDream ultimately won out in the end.
The next Mario & Luigi will return to original characters and environments. M&Lbros have nothing to fear given the circumstances. If you're not already on the M&L boat, you should hop on it already.

Unlike Kaeru No Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru, it sadly wasn't that impressive or mechanically good. I personally think the biggest problem is that it relied too much on a traditional turn-based RPG formula (i.e. reactions and counters weren't particularly a "thing") and a lot of the tools (literally called gimmicks in-game) are just different variations on the same effect with the major difference just being damage numbers with only a handful having different attributes (only a few inflict ailments, lower enemy stats, or hit multiple enemies). M&L actually had properties assigned to ALL of your different attacks and bros. moves, and you can even skew them with badges, such as the Spiny-killer, heal-strikes, counter-damage up, and so on. Plus M&L actually had advance moves. Tomato adventure just let you upgrade gimmicks to raise damage numbers. Enemies would also be affected differently based on what you use. Tomato Adventure didn't go that far.
Interesting to learn about though.
The foundations for something better were definitely there, but it wasn't until M&L Superstar Saga that it really hit its stride, ironically because they cut down on a bunch of the nonsense, which stupidly enough, successive M&L games brought back.
If they had done a TA2 or something like it after the first M&L, I think it would have been great.

Fuck man. On top of that you have to upgrade them as well, using bought items. I think M&L1 did it better because of three things: A) you didn't have a whole bunch of stuff to manage, but rather a few skills (6 at least, 16 at most) that were simple and effective. B) it was timing-based through real-time attacks and effects, meaning you could execute a normal bros move or an advanced one at your leisure. C) you didn't have to pay to power-up your skills
Now, I'm not saying everything has to be super-streamlined, but in the case of something like M&L, I figure it's better to have each thing be different and effective, then just have a bunch of things that do the same effect, just with higher numbers, even though they need to be upgraded as well. In addition, you always have all you bros moves. In TA, you can only equip a handful of gimmicks for use at a time.
As an aside, so I can back this up with my mindset, I feel similarly towards Final Fantasy's need to inflate spell lists with "tier" variants of shit like Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3. Why fucking bother? Better to have a single Fire spell that runs on a multiplier, or, god forbid, use something similar to FF2 that grows with use.

GF2 is technically superior in terms of mechanics to MS1, having 8-way aiming, more weapons, and more situational gimmicks, but it's fucking sloppy and the enemies are insanely damage-sponge in terms of life, even with special weapons.

Look how much ammo had to be blown from the start of the boss to the end. And that's WITHOUT dying. If you died, you have a chance to recover your weapon, if you don't, then you have to use your extremely shitty pea-shooter. And it is fucking awful. At least pistol-ing the bosses in Metal Slug is feasible within a decent amount of time if your button-mashing isn't shit and the use of grenades. If I wasn't constantly dying in GS2, I don't see how the time you have given would be enough to beat a boss with your normal gun. In the rare occassions that I wasn't dying, but only had my normal gun, I actually did time out before even fighting a boss, and just fighting mid-bosses or normal ass grunts, just because your inital gun is that disgustingly weak.
At least Tomato Adventure can be called an enjoyable, though somewhat gimmicky (that's not meant to be a pun) game. GS2 was just fucking garbage, and I'm glad Metal Slug went the route it did (until it died, that is).
