I'm playing through If(Conquest) right now and Corrin isn't so bad. He reminds me or Loran Cehack from Turn A, a person who has to fight and kill, but dislikes it and tries to avoid it when he can. Given how often Japan does this character archetype and how badly it usually comes out, Corrin is pretty good. Unless you choose Hoshido, then he is actually a retard.
But If does have problems. The story isn't awful, but I wish it wasn't so black-and-white with everything. They did a good job making your family in Nohr likeable and relateable, but King Garron is such a cardboard cut-out and it is obvious Anankos is the final boss. I wish they had something interesting, like you discovering Yukimura was in cahoots with Iago and Garron, or Takumi going full Luca Blight and becoming an evil warlord(if that does happen later then fuck me for complaining before finishing it). If I had one real grievance with the game it's that the cast is lacking(in Conquest at least), and that there should have been a better explanation for the children appearing.

One of my main problems is that there are too many damn characters. So many of them are 2 dimensional and have very clearly rushed support conversations because they didn't have enough time to flesh them all out. Let's face it, FE isn't some hardcore tactical game, one of the main draws since it's inception was the characters that you are supposed to grow attached to. I like the main family characters well enough, and there are some really good points to both near the end when the conflict is at it's head, but nearly everyone else feels almost completely throwaway.

Part 4 onwards assumes you have some emuNAND and sets up al9h hax, which makes your sysnand your custom firmware. Otherwise you're going to have to open sysnand some other way and then run your .cia installer, which is different for each custom firmware.
al9h is becoming the standard so you really should set it up anyways. It's really nifty what all it gives you.

I agree, in a way. I like most of the characters, but many of them are flat. My biggest problem is when I start matching people up, I match them up based upon their personalities and how interesting the relationship would be. For example, I paired Miriel up with Ricken in FE13 so she could go /ss/ on him, and I paired up Maribelle and Donnel because I imagined she'd want to fuck like a dirty animal. And I paired Lissa up with Vaike and imagined it was his sad attempt to surpass Chrom(or at least fuck his sister). In Conquest there is nothing that interesting, so I am a lot less invested in the relationships.

The only Fates characters that are memorable to me outside the main cast (siblings, maids, Kaze/Silas) are Arthur and Odin.
