It's basically being culled from memory, in order to keep framerate at 60 (assuming game is running at 60fps). If the rocks continued to render and had their own physics/collision detection, it would look more realistic, but that's gpu and gpu resources being used for reasons that are detrimental to the performance. I felt they missed a giant opportunity to showcase some of their actually good games like NieR, Gravity Rush 2 or Persona in favour of your flavour of the month zombie games and such. The mechanical dinosaur game looks like it has potential but I'm not a fan of the Killzone devs so I'm cautious about it. David Cage has made two of the worst games in the history of video games so who gives a fuck about Detroit? CoD actually looked surprisingly decent. Death Stranding was just a cinematic so I don't give a shit. Resident Evil has ANOTHER mainline genre change and it's just YouTube letsplayer horror bait now.
The only things I liked was The Last Guardian release date and Insomniac Spider-Man. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Nintendo had a good conference at all. Just, Sony has a lot of missed opportunities and it was overall drop dead boring for me.
