Nobody knows what to do with the finger or the axe. You get the axe by using a lockpick found in the VHS to open up a drawer in the kitchen, and then in the present you open the same unlocked drawer to get an axe.

I keep thinking the secret is to break three mannequins with the axe since there are three initially in the mannequin room.
The three I'm thinking of is the one in the attic, the one in the hallway near the exit and the one that appears in front of the stair case. The problem is the last one disappears after watching the vhs tape.

I think the gimmick is that you're some random schmuck who got caught up in this and the BSAA or STARS or whenever this game takes place comes in to clean it up and you're following them around trying to survive. That way they keep the iconic characters, but also first-person so it doesn't ruin said characters and you can see things from a different perspective.

If you watch the video tape 7 times, during your 7th time the video will cut and a ghost screamer will pop up and break the TV screen.
Inside the screen is a mannequin hand missing a finger. Place the finger into the hand to complete it, take it to the meat hook and place it there. You'll hear a click from the other side of the house. Go to the locked door up the stairs and into a new room. This new room is a large closet filled with hanging skin. This is where you use your axe to hack your way through to find a hole to drop down in.

Honestly, this is my number one concern for this game. I am fine with the potential of the new style, but to me the one defining thing about the Resident Evil series was that it was strictly a science fiction horror series. No ghosts, demons, or angry gods, only zombies, mutants, and biological weapons. The premise of the RE series is more flexible than people give credit for, there are a lot of stories you can tell and styles of gameplay you can make with the premise of a biohazard outbreak. But to me, Resident Evil stops being Resident Evil when you introduce supernatural elements to it. That's the breaking point for me since that goes against the very core of what the series is about. And that's why I remain skeptical of this game, because it is implying it very well could be the case.
