To be fair piracy kicked the shit out of PSP software sales (as in, hardware sales were decent but software sales sucked because no one wanted to develop for the thing because there were so many people on CFW). No games meant normies on OFW weren't as interested in it.
There was a slight uptick when the Go was released because it wasn't cracked, but then the PS3 was cracked and through it all models of PSP can now use CFW regardless of what OFW they are on.
Sony was terrified of piracy because it destroyed the PSP and took a chunk out of PS3 software sales, this is why the PS4's USB ports are locked down out the ass (peripherals have to have a special security chip, the only other thing it can be used for is with the mp3 player which runs in a sandbox) and the Vita had security turned up to 11 (you can't even use the memory card in the vita as a normal external drive when plugged in via USB, you have to run Sony's program for the Vita to even register past an icon).
I think that if the Vita got cracked hardware sales would skyrocket, memory card sales would skyrocket, and Sony would make bank as a result.

When something like ac, youkai watch, or mh comes out, the 3ds btfos the vita by astronomical proportions for months on end. This shouldn't surprise anyone; were these games on vita and not 3ds, the exact opposite would happen. Thus they're not really indicative of the platforms, but the relative popularity of major ips.
When there aren't major shitstorms, there are 3ds game droughts for months on end. During these periods of time, the vita regularly beats the 3ds with just a single new release, no matter how unpopular it is. The vita thoroughly btfos the 3ds when publishers time releases so 5-6 new games all come out the same day.
In short, this confirms every console war ever. The most popular games make the most popular platforms, not the other way around. Criticizing the vita for being less popular than the 3ds is retarded. Nothing can be more popular than a nintendo handheld unless you're on bizarro world where neptunia sells 50 million copies and mario is a niche series played by grown men.
Nobody calls the psp a failure when 80 million fewer units of hardware than the ds. That's not the mark of a bad system, only a different one.

Right at the end of March someone who had been talking a lot about stock issues for Fire Emblem at Walmart posted that Sony had cancelled all restocks of units to store warehouses. He posted it to /r/Vita and /r/games and was immediately voted down since it said something bad about the Vita and/or viewed as an April fools joke. He even verified with a mod that it was legit. However, he deleted it a couple hours later since it was tanking his karma but still said it was true.
