Unfortunately, as most of you already know, Half-Life 3 isn't at E3 this year. Let me try and shed some light on this topic for the true fans.
Firstly, I won't say who I am and whether or not I have or currently am working at Valve. I will say this, however, and you all are not going to like it. It's very unfortunate since I and many of the people at Valve are the biggest Half-Life fans of all.
A lot of work has gone into HL3 over the years to almost no positive results. Different innovations were tried over and over again. It seemed like every other month or so, the new big "thing" was buzzing around the cafeteria while people ate their lunches. This got old pretty quickly and recently, there's been quite a lot of tensions between a lot of people at Valve because the people who still bravely try and save the sinking ship of Half-Life 3 and continue to work on it are seen as wasting their time. Source 2 has made quite a bit of progress over these last few years and other projects and opportunities are in mind with that incredible engine. We developed it with the sole purpose of Half-Life 3 showcasing it's true potential at first. Now, this is not the case.
A lot of key Half-Life members have left the company, and those who haven't are either working on other unannounced projects or existing ones. Half-Life 3 is unfortunately losing its progress. There are a few of us who are deeply saddened by this, and we know the fans would absolutely hate to hear this, but I can't quite be the bad guy anymore since I'm one of the few people who knows this information. I feel as if it's owed to you true fans. It's been too long.
As the big-wigs at the office like to say, "Maybe Gordon's time has passed." I don't personally think so, but a project like Half-Life 3 can't possibly be made with only a handful of people. Valve's unfortunate future is to deeply invest in the "Games-as-a-service" idea that has been going on for quite some time.
