Skater (Fun game to play around in, I like skateboarding)
You're probably best off looking for Android versions of "computer games" (the likes of NetHack and Star Control 2) or emulation instead of "smartphone games".
There's no "must have" games in general.

I've personally used DroidFish. The UI and features are pretty good and while it doesn't really matter even for the best humans at this point in terms of play (in terms of analysis and such like, it might), I think StockFish is the #2 rated engine right now.

One anon recommended Alto's Adventure to me a while ago and I got pretty into that, it's a really simple game but the artstyle is fantastic, worth playing for that alone in my opinion. The soundtrack is pretty relaxing too.

Dead Trigger is a fun zombie game.
